The Ghini is a one-eyed ghost that has appeared as a recurring enemy within the The Legend of Zelda series.

Information

Ghinis are one-eyed creatures that usually resemble the typical image of a ghost, and in many cases they have their tongues on display. They are vulnerable to most weapons, but most versions of the Ghini are resilient enough to take many hits before they are defeated. Ghinis are most commonly found in graveyards and have been known to suddenly appear after one pushes a gravestone. This could result in multiple Ghinis appearing, and within The Legend of Zelda, the extra Ghinis were invulnerable, and only by destroying the original Ghini could all of them be cleared away.

The Ghini's appearance and abilities remain consistent throughout their appearances. The main exception is in The Minish Cap, where they are shown to be attracted to light sources. Their new attack pattern has them pursuing Link, then trying to enwrap and lick him to suck his life force away. Larger, stronger versions of the Ghini known as the Giant Ghini have also appeared in Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Four Swords Adventures, where they are primarily treated as minibosses. Additionally, in Four Swords Adventures, Jalhalla wound up being composed of multiple Ghinis combined in one battle.

There has been one instance of a friendly Ghini in The Minish Cap. This is a female Ghini named Gina who lives within a tomb at the Royal Valley, where she will trade Kinstones with Link. There was also a Ghini-like ghost in Link's Awakening who followed Link until brought to his grave, although it does not seem to have been an actual Ghini.

Trivia

  • The Legend of Zelda is the only game where a Ghini has been depicted with two eyes. The Giant Ghini has also been portrayed with two eyes in Link's Awakening and Oracle of Ages.
