The Goriya is a rat-like demon that has acted as a recurring enemy in several games of the The Legend of Zelda series.

Information

A Goriya is a furry demon with face resembling a rat. The weaker versions usually have blue fur while the stronger ones have red. The Goriya's signature weapon is the boomerang, and their main attack is usually to simply throw the boomerangs at enemies repeatedly. Their toughness depends on the individual game and type, as some Goriyas can be taken down quickly, while others will withstand multiple attacks before being beaten.

Appearances

In The Legend of Zelda, Goriyas originally appeared within the dungeons and were unfocused in their attacks. Some rooms would feature a sole hungry Goriya who would let Link pass through if fed bait. Goriyas had a larger presence in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, where they were found in a variety of environments such as fields or caves and were among the stronger enemies encountered outside of the dungeons. Goriyas would toss one boomerang after another and at different angles, and they primarily appeared alone or in pairs. One particular Goriya was shown to have stolen a trophy from the Town of Ruto and had to be defeated in a cave at the Tantari Desert.

Link's Awakening marks the only friendly appearance by a Goriya. The game's only Goriya is found in a cave at Toronbo Shore at the end of the trading sidequest and will trade his boomerang to Link in exchange for any item. It was possible to trade back afterwards. In Oracle of Seasons, a pair of Goriyas known as the Goriya Bros. appeared as the collective miniboss within the Gnarled Root Dungeon. These two shared a single boomerang which they tossed between each other. They could be defeated through normal means. One was red while the other was blue

The Goriya name was also used for a very different enemy in A Link to the Past. Although they were also green and red creatures with rat-like features, these enemies were known as Koppis in Japanese and were known for perfectly mimicking Link's movements. The red ones could shoot fireballs at Link when they faced each other and had to be destroyed with arrows.

Other Appearances

Other Media

  • Goriyas were featured in several episodes of the Zelda cartoon as minions of Ganon, and one also appeared in a Captain N episode where Link worked with Captain N to defeat it.
  • They also made various appearances in the Zelda II-inspired Valiant comic series, once more being shown as minions of Ganon whom Link and Zelda often do battle with.
