Debut Star Fox Adventures

Tricky is the prince of the EarthWalker Tribe who acted as Fox McCloud's sidekick in Star Fox Adventures.

Background

Tricky was the son of the EarthWalker Tribe's king and queen. He was headstrong and eager for adventure, which would get him into trouble sometimes. When he was first seen, he had been captured by the SharpClaws, who were holding him at Ice Mountain. However, Fox was able to rescue him and returned to ThornTail Hollow with him. They found that Tricky's mother was sick, but Tricky was able to help him find White GrubTubs to help her, remembering that she had fed him the White GrubTubs when he was sick. After recovering, Queen EarthWalker decided that Tricky should accompany Fox in his quest, as only a dinosaur of noble birth could breathe life into the SpellStones that could restore Sauria, and he knew much about the world.

So Tricky acted as Fox's sidekick throughout his adventure, only staying behind at certain times, such as when Fox used the WarpStone. Tricky also stayed behind when Fox helped the CloudRunners, due to a prejudice between the EarthWalkers and CloudRunners. They eventually made their way to the Walled City, where they saved Tricky's imprisoned father. After all the SpellStones had been returned, Fox and Tricky returned to the Walled City, where Fox received one of the last Krazoa Spirits. As Fox's journey was nearing its end, it was decided that Tricky would stay behind with his father at the city while Fox went ahead to the final confrontations with General Scales and Andross. Fox assured Tricky that the mission would have failed without him and gave him a Star Fox badge, naming him an honorary member of Star Fox.

Tricky grew larger over the next year, and it was implied that he had become king of the EarthWalker tribe due to Fox's comment that he "is the leader here now". He made a small appearance in Star Fox Assault, when Sauria was attacked by aparoids. Star Fox arrived and fended off the invasion. After completing the mission, Fox and Krystal were reunited with Tricky, who wanted to help Fox in the battle, but Fox reminded him that his place was on Sauria. Tricky then made Fox nervous by saying he would make Sauria better so that Fox and Krystal could come on their honeymoon, and he then teased Fox a bit about his hesitance to discuss his feelings for Krystal.

Abilities

Tricky can dig holes to find secrets such as items or tunnels. He can also breathe fire after learning the Flame Command. Tricky's acute senses can also tell when something is hidden nearby. Tricky can also be commanded to stay in order to hold down switches and such, and he would catch up to Fox when he whistles. However, Tricky needs to be fed regular with GrubTub Fungi in order for him to obey most commands, with a meter telling his hunger.

Trivia

  • He is known for having the same name as and a similar appearance to Tricky the Triceratops, a boss from Diddy Kong Racing, which led to speculation that the two are somehow the same character due to both games being made by Rare. In Rare Scribes, it was clarified that they were originally the same character due to the Dinosaur Planet project originally being intended to be a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, but the project eventually evolved into its own entity while Tricky evolved into a separate character (while retaining his original name).
  • A trophy of Tricky appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
  • In Star Fox Adventures, Fox can use the Tricky's Ball item to play with Tricky, and using it long enough would cause Tricky's skin to change color.
