Super Mario 3D World is a platforming adventure game released for the Wii U in 2013. It acts as a sequel to Super Mario 3D Land, which had been released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

Story[edit]

Mario and his friends discover that Bowser has kidnapped the seven Sprixie Princesses. So they travel to the Sprixie Kingdom on a mission to defeat him and rescue them all.

Gamplay[edit]

The gameplay is similar to Super Mario 3D Land, which combined the gameplay of the two primary different styles of the Mario adventure games. Like the 3-D games, characters can roam freely in three-dimensional environments and perform more acrobatic maneauvers. Like the classic 2-D games, characters are set to clear through multiple levels within a time limit, with the singular objective being to reach a level's goal. This game adds cooperative multiplayer for up to four players. Players can choose between Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and a Toad, with Rosalina also being unlockable. Each character also plays differently, similar to the character selection from Super Mario Bros. 2.

This game brings back most of the power-ups from Super Mario 3D Land while introducing several others. There is the Super Bell. which provides a Cat Suit power-up, and a Lucky Bell, which can temporarily turn characters into lucky cat statues. Other power-ups include Double Cherries (which produce clones of the player) and several types of blocks that can be worn and used by the player. The game also features several areas where the player controls Captain Toad. Captain Toad cannot jump, so these areas are puzzle-based in nature.

As this was released during the Year of Luigi, it is also possible to unlock a Luigi-themed version of Mario Bros. called Luigi Bros..

Legacy[edit]

This game ended up inspiring a Captain Toad spin-off game in the form of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Sequels[edit]

The next platforming Mario adventure would be Super Mario Odyssey in 2017.
