Debut | The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker |
The Wind Waker is a conductor's baton that is featured as the titular instrument for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Background[edit]
The Wind Waker was originally owned by King Daphnes, and in the past he used it to conduct the sages when they played a song to call the gods. Apparently, in those days, simply using it would allow one to borrow power from the gods. Like most relics from Ancient Hyrule, its power seemed to wane after the Great Flood. King Daphnes was later able to sail the seas from Ancient Hyrule by possessing a boat called the King of Red Lions, and the Wind Waker was apparently held by the boat to wait for the coming of a new hero, although it is uncertain through what means the king was able to bring the baton to the surface of the Great Sea.
Regardless, the King of Red Lions passed this baton on to Link when they arrived at Dragon Roost Island. Link learned his first and most important song, the Wind's Requiem, from Zephos's monument on the island. With the Wind Waker and the Wind's Requiem, Link was able to manipulate the winds and make his sailing easier. He quickly earned the respect of the wind spirit Zephos and later did the same with his troublesome brother Cyclos due to his skill with the Wind Waker. Link also used the Wind Waker similarly to the king when he conducted the new sages Medli and Makar so that they could empower the Master Sword. His mastery of the Wind Waker likely also played a role in him being dubbed the "Hero of Winds".
The whereabouts of the Wind Waker following the game are unknown, as it was not shown in Link's possession or alluded to during the events of the sequel game, Phantom Hourglass.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In the Super Smash Bros. games, Link waves the Wind Waker around in one of his taunts and victory poses from Brawl onwards.
- In Hyrule Warriors, one of the weapon classes that Zelda can use is called the Baton, with its basic weapon being the Wind Waker. The advanced versions are known as the Sacred Baton and Glorious Baton. The Wind Waker can be used to attack with gusts of wind, tornadoes, lightning strikes and sound waves from different songs. The songs that Zelda can play on the Wind Waker include some of the same ones from the original game, with the addition of Saria's Song and the Song of Storms. The Wind Waker also appeared as an Item Card in Adventure Mode, where it could be used to stop headwinds and remove some locks on different squares of the map.
Trivia[edit]
- The Wind Waker is controlled by moving the C-stick to a rhythm, and Link can also change the time signature for certain songs. The three types of time signatures used in the game are 3/4 (the default one), 4/4 and 6/4.
- Within the game, Link himself is referred to as "Wind Waker" by some other characters.
- An unused model of the Wind Waker was found in the files of Twilight Princess.
