Super Mario Maker is a Mario game that was originally released for the Wii U in 2015. Unlike other Mario games, this one is based around creating, playing and sharing customized levels in the style of the 2-D side-scrolling Mario games.

Gameplay

The player is able to create levels using elements from various Mario games. The game features four different visual styles to choose from, based on Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U, which also effect some of the gameplay elements and enemy behaviors. The game's editting tools allow the player to make a variety of unique twists on standard gameplay and to create more challenging obstacles, such as giving Lakitu different objects to throw and stacking or enlarging different enemies. Courses are uploaded to the online Course World, where players can browse through and play other players' courses. This includes the 100 Mario Challenge, in which players play through a series a user-created courses with 100 lives. There is also the 10 Mario Challenge, in which players play through pre-made courses with 10 lives.

The game also features an item called the Mystery Mushroom, through which Mario can become Costume Mario and take on the form of a costume. There are about 150 costumes representing not only different Mario characters, but characters from other Nintendo series and even some real-life personalities. Most of the costumes can be unlocked through the 100 Mario Challenge, although some are available through special Event Courses or by scanning a corresponding amiibo.

Legacy

A level based on Super Mario Maker was included in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The stage alternated between areas based on the different gameplay styles, and a hand would appear on the screen wielding a stylus to change some elements of the stage around.

Ports/Remakes

  • In December 2016, the game was ported to the 3DS as Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. In addition to some gameplay tweaks, this version removed some elements such as the Mystery Mushroom and the Big Mushroom, and with the former also went the game's amiibo support and Event Courses. Players could still play courses created for the Wii U version that did not utilize one of the removed items. More elements of the game are also available from the start, and the 10 Mario Challenge is replaced with Super Mario Challenge, which consists of 100 courses made by Nintendo that are divided into 18 different worlds.
