Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a side-scrolling platforming adventure that was released for the Wii U in 2014 and acts as a sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Story[edit]

Donkey Kong Island is suddenly invaded by a group of warriors known as the Snowmads. Donkey Kong's birthday is disrupted, and he and his friends are sent flying away from the island during the attack. WIth the help of an ice dragon under their control, the Snowmads turn the island into their new arctic home. Donkey Kong and his friends start to make their way back to the island in order to stop them and save the island.

Gameplay[edit]

Most of the gameplay and structure of the game is retained from Returns, from the Kongs' actions, to the collectible KONG letters and puzzle pieces in each level. This game features more control options and allows some more actions such as plucking objects out of the ground and picking up fallen enemies. There is also a "Kong-POW" meter that, when filled up, will allow the player to perform an action that will destroy all enemies on screen and turn them into items.

This game features Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong again, but it also adds Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong. They each have a unique ability, with Dixie having her helicopter spin while Cranky can use his cane as a pogo stick to jump through spiked areas. When playing in single player, Donkey Kong can have one of the other three as a partner at a time. With multiplayer, the second player can control one of the three other Kongs. Each world also has a shop, which is now run by Funky Kong. Players can now purchase a wider variety of helpful items, as a substitute for the Super Guide that was excluded from this game.

Legacy[edit]

Ports/Remakes[edit]

  • In 2018, it was released for the Nintendo Switch. This release added Funky Mode, a version of the game in which players could choose to play as either Donkey Kong or Funky Kong. Funky Kong was designed with easier gameplay; although no partner characters appear when playing as him, he has extra hit points, a double jump, a hovering ability and the abilities to stand on spikes and breathe underwater without any limits.
