A Like Like is a gelatinous, shield-eating creature that has appeared as a recurring enemy in the The Legend of Zelda series.
Information
The Like Likes are tube-shaped monsters that live both on ground and under water. These creatures can pop up from the ground unexpectedly and swallow up travelers, eating their shields or tunics in the progress. They have no interest in actually eating the people and will promptly spit the person out after devouring what they want. They are generally found inside of dark places like caves and dungeons, but have also been seen to live underwater, such as in the Great Bay of Termina. However they are unable to eat rare items, such as the Mirror Shield.
A variation known as Rupee Likes (also known as Pseudo Rupees or Psuedo Force Gems) are Like Likes that have a Rupee hanging from their esca like an anglerfish's luminescent bulb. They hide underground appearing as normal Rupees, until someone tries to collect - at which point they leap out of the ground and entangle their self around the person, eating up Rupees in the process.
Game Information
In The Legend of Zelda, Like Likes are found in dungeons starting after the fourth one. They are difficult to defeat and can sustain a lot of damage before dying. Once they capture Link, they will begin taking his life away and will eat his shield if he doesn't slash his way free in time. Even after being defeated, they won't give up the shield.
In A Link to the Past, Like Likes are much different than before. They appear in the Skull Forest and are a hopping plant that extends a long tongue to steal items from Link and will give up the last item it stole after being killed. In the the remake, standard Like Likes appear in the Four Sword Sanctuary. Like in the original, once it eats the shield it's gone forever.
In Link's Awakening, Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages, Like Likes behave similar to their first appearance. In Link's Awakening, the shield is returned after its killed, but lost permanently in the other two games. Like in previous games, its generally easiest to kill them with projectiles. They also appear in The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks where they behave as they do in Link's Awakening. They are notably tougher in the latter two games, however, and suck up air like a vaccine in an attempt to reel in Link (although he can toss a bomb instead to stop this). In Spirit Tracks, Like Likes often hide themselves within pots or fake treasure chests. Like Likes also appeared in A Link Between Worlds, where they were found only in Lorule.
In Ocarina of Time, Like Likes appear to be more gelatinous and appear mainly in dungeons. They can not only eat shields, but also the special tunics Link buys. Once they're killed, they dissolve into liquid on the ground. They are dealt with the same way in Majora's Mask, only they are found in the Great Bay area. They are usually found underwater, but come out on land at night.
Rupee Likes
Rupee Likes first appear in Four Swords. They appear underground with only the Rupee lure showing. As soon as someone walks over it, the Rupee Like will jump out and begin stealing Rupees away until killed. The color of the Rupee on their lure will determine how many Rupees they steal at one time. They reappear in The Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass and A Link Between Worlds, where they behave the same way. In Four Swords Adventures they are little different, but have a Force Gem as bait instead and consequently, steal Force Gems.
Deku Likes
Another variation exists in Twilight Princess known as the Deku Like. It is a symbiotic creature that live alongside a giant Deku Baba. They cannot move and in general are only found in positions where Link is most likely to fall from. They do not eat shields, but instead just chew Link up a bit and spit him out. Deku Likes are impervious to external damage, but if it swallows a bomb it will be destroyed from the internal explosion.
Heart Like
The Heart Like is a variation that appeared in Tri Force Heroes. This is similar to the Rupee Likes, except that it has a heart that it uses as bait instead of a Rupee. When someone is caught by a Heart Like, it will drain the victim's hearts quickly, essentially causing normal damage. They are found in the Drablands.
Other Appearances
=Video Games
- In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Like Likes appear as enemies in the Underground Maze level of Adventure Mode and may randomly appear from containers during Melee Mode. A trophy of the Like Like can also be obtained in Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Like Like appears as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit with the effect of making the player fighter immune to sticky floors. When fought in a Spirit battle, the Like Like's Spirit will possess a yellow Yoshi and focus on grabs and throws in a battle involving a sticky floor and the player fighter receiving sudden damage periodically.
Trivia
- The Super Smash Bros. Melee trophy description gives an in-universe explanation of the Like Like's name, saying that it originates from an ancient Hylian proverb saying "Shield-eaters and world leaders have many likes alike".
- In Oracles of Seasons and Ages, Link can obtain a Like Like ring which makes him look like a Like Like. The change is only cosmetic and it has no effect on how he acts or interacts with others.
