Shedinja is the living shed shell of an insect-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It can be formed during a Nincada's evolution into Ninjask under special conditions.

Information[edit]

Nincada evolves into Ninjask at Level 20, and this seems to be when Shedinja is created. Shedinja can only be obtained by a trainer if said trainer has a spare Poké Ball and an empty slot in the party when Nincada evolves. Shedinja is a discarded bug shell (most likely from the Nincada) that comes to life under unknown circumstances. It is a peculiar Pokémon with a strange hollow-shelled body that does not move at all and only floats in the air without moving its wings. It is said that those who look into Shedinja's hollow and utterly dark body through its back will have their souls stolen by the Pokémon. Shedinja does not even appear to breathe.

Shedinja is notable in that it has only one HP. However, it also has the Wonder Guard ability which makes it impervious to all direct attacks of a type that Shedinja does not have a type weakness against. Shedinja will still be instantly beaten by direct damage from super effective attacks and indirect attacks, however.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

Shedinja has not been found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Nincada under the aforementioned special conditions.

Other Games[edit]

Shedinja appears only when a Nincada evolves into Ninjask in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 19, Endless Level 33, Forever Level 33 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Lyra Forest. Shedinja could also be recruited in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness at Mt. Travail.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Shedinja appeared as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit with the effect of heightening defense at the cost of starting battles with 30% damage. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Shedinja's Spirit would possess Mr. Game & Watch in a stamina battle. That Mr. Game & Watch would be able to reflect all projectile attacks and would also have invincibility constantly turning on and off.

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, aside from several minor appearances, Shedinja's most primarily appearance has been as the main Pokémon of the villainous Colonel Hansen, although Misty's Gyarados was eventually able to beat it using Flamethrower.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Amber's Nincada (which he received from Shelly) evolved into Ninjask during his battle with Wattson near the end of the Ruby/Sapphire arc and secretly produced a Shedinja in the process. Amber used the Shedinja as his trump card after the Ninjask was defeated, knocking Wattson off a cliff. Emerald and Greta also both exploited Ninjask's battle capabilities during the Emerald arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "shed" (due to it being the shed skin of another Pokémon) with "ninja" (which is used for the names of all the Pokémon in the family even though Ninjask is the only member with explicitly ninja-like traits).
