Arcanine is a large dog-like Pokémon that evolves from Growlithe and was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games.

Information[edit]

Arcanine evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone. It is said to hail from China, where it is considered a legendary Pokémon and has been admired for its beauty. Arcanine are known for their agility, to the point where they appear to be running on wings. Arcanine can run up to 6,200 miles in a single day and night. It even has a magnificent bark which is authoritative enough to make most other Pokémon grovel before it.

Its power source is a fire which blazes throughout its body. Arcanine have been admired for ages, even in ancient picture scrolls.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

Arcanine has not appeared in the wild in any color versions and can only be obtained through evolution.

Other Games[edit]

Arcanine could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball. In Pokémon Snap, Arcanine could be photographed at the Volcano area. Two Arcanine appear within Pokémon Puzzle League, one in Gary's roster in the rematch against him and one in Blaine's roster. In Pokémon Trozei!, Arcanine was found at Endless Levels 74, Forever Level 24, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Arcanine could only be recruited through an evolved Growlithe.

Arcanine was found at Jungle Relic in Pokémon Ranger. In Explorers of Time and Darkness, Arcanine was found at the first nine floors of Giant Volcano, the seventh through fifteenth floors of Dark Crater, the first fourteen basement floors of Dark Crater Pit and the first seventeen floors of Shimmer Hill. Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Arcanine was featured as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit that allowed a player fighter to start a battle with the effect of the Superspicy Curry item (which is fire breath). When fought against in a Spirit battle, Arcanine's Spirit would possess a giant Duck Hunt with enhanced strength in a battle where the floor is lava.

Other Media[edit]

  • Within the Pokémon anime series, Arcanine have sometimes been shown as police dogs along with Growlithe. Gary also was shown to have an Arcanine as one of his main Pokémon. He entered it in an Extreme Pokémon Race in one Johto-era episode and during the Silver Conference it was defeated by Ash's Snorlax. Another Johto series episode featured a pair of trainers who owned three Arcanine between them. During the Hoenn series, one episode focused on May and Drew's attempts to capture an Arcanine, only to quit when they saw that it was taking care of a litter of young Growlithe.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blaine is shown to have an Arcanine but only uses it once briefly. During the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, Arcanine is introduced as one of Crystal's main Pokémon that she rescued from Mt. Mortar after its eye was injured by a prankster Larvitar. She frequently had it used Extremespeed on enemies. Within the same saga, Blue was shown to have his own Arcanine that he trained to act as part of his gym team, which battled trainers at his gym for him when he was away.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "arcane" (meaning mysterious) with "canine".
