Wailord is a gargantuan whale-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It evolves from Wailmer and is the largest known Pokémon.

Information

Evolving from Wailmer at Level 40, Wailord is the largest of identified Pokémon and spends its time wandering the ocean, eating large amounts of fish with its enormous mouth. They herd prey in a pack and then swallow them in one massive gulp, usually after leaping out of the sea with other members of their pod. They are quite impressive creatures and are known to be capable of diving to almost 10,000 feet on only one breath taken at maximum capacity. As they are mammal-like, they breathe through their nostrils when raised above the sea.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Wailord can be rarely found by surfing on Route 129. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Wailord can be found at Routes 223 and 230 when fishing with the Super Rod. In Black and White, they had a rare chance of appearing at surfing spots at Undella Bay.

Other Games

Wailord can be obtained through evolving Wailmer in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire. In Pokémon Trozei!, Wailord can be found in Huge Storage 5 or Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, they can only be obtained in evolution while in Explorers of Darkness and Time, Wailord can be found and recruited in the Bottomless Sea. Additionally, in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Wailord is featured in a mission at the Sea of Wailord in which it had been captured by Team Dim Sun. After being freed, it later attacked Kincaid's submarine and acts as a ferry to the Capture Arena following the main storyline's completion. Wailord also appears in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Beach Zone.

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Wailord has made a cameo appearance at the Kalos Pokémon League stage seen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it appeared in the background of the stage's Flood Chamber form. Its appearance was accompanied by a trophy in the Wii U game.

In Other Media

• Wailord have been featured in several episodes of the Pokémon anime. In one, Ash and company helped a beached Wailord. In another episode, a Wailord that evolved from a Wailmer one character had befriended transported Ash and his friends to a ship to Ever Grande City. Additionally one Diamond/Pearl-era episode revolved around Ash and his friends helping a Wailmer evolve at which point it rejoined its friends in the ocean.
• In the Pokémon Adventures, Wailord was a Pokémon belonging to Professor Birch as well as his granddaughter Sapphire which was usually kept out at sea. Sapphire used it as transportation to Dewford Island.

Trivia

• Its name is a play on "whale" and "wail" combined with "lord".
