Luigi's Mansion 3 is an adventure game that was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. It follows Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon as the third game of the Luigi's Mansion subseries (or fourth if counting Luigi's Mansion Arcade.
Story[edit]
Luigi was invited to spend a free night at a hotel called the Last Resort and to bring guests. He ended up bringing Mario, Princess Peach and several Toads, as well as being accompanied by the Polterpup. However, the hotel turned out to be a trap. Its owner, Hellen Gravely, is actually a ghost who is working with King Boo, who she idolizes. Together they turn most of the guests into paintings, with only Luigi and the Polterpup escaping from them. Finding some of E. Gadd's ghost-hunting equipment in the garage, Luigi began fighting off the ghosts in order to find a way to save his friends.
Gameplay[edit]
As in past games, the player controls Luigi in exploring rooms and battling ghosts, while armed primarily with a Poltergust device. Some of the Poltergust's features from Dark Moon are retained, such as the Strobulb and the Dark-Light Device. This is combined with several new functions. While sucking ghosts, Luigi can use a slam attack to drain their health faster. The Poltergust can now also fire a plunger that can be used as a projectile and to pull on certain objects or surfaces, and there is also a burst attack that can stun enemies that are close. This game also includes Gooigi, who made an early appearance in the 3DS version of the original Luigi's Mansion. Gooigi is a gooey doppleganger of Luigi who can enter different areas, but has less HP and dissolves instantly upon contact with water. It is possible for Gooigi to be controlled by a second player as co-op gameplay.
In this game, Luigi has to explore the various floors of the haunted hotel. The only way to reach most of the floors is through the hotel's sole elevator, which is initially missing all of its buttons. By exploring a floor and defeating various ghosts, usually including a boss ghost, Luigi can unlock an elevator button that can be used to reach a new floor. Most of the floors follow different themes and have their own resident boss ghost. After a floor has been cleared, it can be revisited in order to search for a [[Boo]. As in Dark Moon, each floor has a set of hidden gems to collect as a bonus. As with past games, there is also a lot of money to be collected throughout the setting. The money could be used to buy Gold Bones and items that can be used to help find Boos or gems.
This game also has two multiplayer modes, which can be played locally or online, with up to eight players. Players can control up to four different color variations of Luigi or Gooigi. The ScareScraper, returning from Dark Moon, is a cooperative mode in which players work together to clear floors of a tower. In the new ScreamPark mode, teams of Luigis and Gooigis compete against each other in a Ghost Hunt, Cannon Barrage (about securing and firing cannonballs) and Coin Floating (about collecting coins).
DLC has also been made available for purchase after the game's release, split into parts released in April and July 2020. The DLC is for the game's multiplayer mode and includes new costumes for Luigi, new minigames for ScarePark, new floor types for ScareScraper, six new themed ghosts and a special Polterpup-themed version of the game's flashlight.
