Wallace is one of the playable units in Fire Emblem. He was a strict and powerful knight who believed in following his superiors' orders, but not blindly.
Background
Wallace started out as a squire when he was only ten years old. At the time he was puny, which caused the other children to tease him. But Wallace was able to learn from a great mercenary named Renault. Wallace felt he owed much to this teacher, and at one point he swore to Renault that he would always fight for the good of the people and never use the skills Renault taught him for evil.
Wallace served as a knight for Caelin for thirty years. When he was in his prime, Wallace was the commander of Caelin's knights. He also wrote the Manual of Knightly Prowess, which contained a training regimen that was apparently extremely difficult. Wallace was still a knight during the time that Lord Hausen's daughter Madelyn eloped with the Sacae nomad Hassar. Hausen dispatched Wallace to retrieve them. Wallace found them, but he found himself unable to break up true love so he let them go and spent some time in the dungeon for it. Wallace eventually retired and became a farmer.
In Fire Emblem, he was called out of retirement by Lundgren, who told Wallace he was hunting an imposter claiming to be the marquess's granddaughter (Lyn), and the two rogue knights accompanying her. He eventually met up with Lyn's group in Chapter 9 and demanded to see Lyn alone. Simply by looking into her eyes, Wallace came to the conclusion that Lyn was no deceiver, and that Lundgren was the true villain. He said that since he had pledged his loyalty to Caelin, he would not allow a usurper like Lundgren on the throne.
After Lundgren was defeated, Wallace's fighting spirit was reawakened. He then set off in search of causes to fight for, but due to his lacking any sense of direction, he spent most of his time getting lost and wandering around. Wallace reappears one year later in Four-Fanged Offense (Eliwood Chapter 23, Hector Chapter 24). However, he only appears on the version of the chapter where Lloyd is the boss, which is reached only if the combined levels of Lyn, Eliwood and Hector were less than 50.
Wallace traveled to Bern in order to slay the Taliver bandits, and succeeded in doing so. He did this to make Lyn happy, because those bandits had killed her parents, and Wallace did not want her to suffer from a desire for revenge. But he could not find his way back to Caelin afterwards, but he did stumble upon Eliwood and his group in battle with the Black Fang. Wallace would join Eliwood's group if Lyn or one of Lyn's old teammates from the first ten chapters spoke to him. If Wallace joins the group, his ending shows that he once again becomes lost while trying to find a way to Caelin. He winds up in Ilia and decides to resume his farming career there.
Trivia
- When Wallace first joins the group, he is already past Level 10 and has a Knight Crest, so he can automatically be promoted to General class. In fact, the player is required to promote Wallace while playing the Easy Mode.
