Ezlo was a skilled Minish craftsman and sorceror. He served as Link's travelling companion in The Minish Cap, in the same vein as other characters in modern Zelda games such as Navi or Midna.

Background

Despite being a bitter and cranky old man, Ezlo was renowned in the Minish world for his great inventions. And with his magic he could grow himself to human size and shrink back down while standing on objects embued with Minish magic. But the wise man made the mistake of bringing a young boy named Vaati in as his apprentice. When Ezlo created a powerful hat capable of granting any wish in the days before the portal from the Minish world to Hyrule opened, Vaati stole the hat and used it to take on a wicked human form. Ezlo could not stop Vaati in time, and with his new power Vaati turned Ezlo into a talking hat with a bird-mouth, human sized.

Soon the portal between worlds opened, and Ezlo wandered Hyrule in search of a way to break this curse until he was attacked by Octoroks in the Minish Woods- only to be saved by Link, a young and capless hero. Link was just starting his adventure to fix the Picori Blade and use it to save Hyrule from Vaati in The Minish Cap. Ezlo realized that helping this kid beat Vaati might be the only way to restore him to normal, so the bird-hat hitched a ride on Link's head. Ezlo served as a guide throughout Link's quest when he wasn't complaining. He also retained his shrinking and growing magic. He used this to shrink himself and Link down to Minish size not only for easier communication with the Minish but also to solve several puzzles they encountered on their quest. Ezlo's path crossed with Vaati's several times during the quest, when Vaati would usually taunt the hat and then sic monsters on him.

Finally the time came for the final showdown with Vaati. With the teamwork between Link and Ezlo, Vaati was destroyed for the time being and left behind the sorceror's hat. Ezlo, now restored to his original form, apologized for all the trouble he caused by creating the hat, but then he thought of a great solution to the problem. He gave the hat to Princess Zelda, and with her good heart, she used the hat's power to fix the damage Vaati caused. Then Ezlo saw that the gateway to the Minish world was closing. So he shared a heartfelt farwell with Link and Zelda, and even gave Link his own cap, before he entered the portal and returned to the Minish world.

Trivia

• Ezlo may be responsible for the Gnat Hats which appear in The Four Swords. They allow the wearer to shrink, and physically resemble the hat Vaati stole in The Minish Cap.
