Uncle Rupee is a being with a head shaped like a demon. He takes the form of an old man to lull people into contributing rupees to reach the fabled Rupeeland.
Background
It is unknown how long Uncle Rupee has existed, but it may have been for as long as rupees existed. He is an ancient being who will take the appearance of a kindly old man, he will then find a person and lull them into contributing rupees into a pond (or something similar), but only after giving them a set of green tights and a small amount of rupees to get started with. At this point, they can no longer live without rupees and will die if they run out. He even captured the Grand Fairy's daughter, Pinkle and transformed her into a human and locked her in a room in which she could only communicate through a terminal to Uncle Rupee's followers.
This happened with a 35-year old man (named by the player) who was one day called by Uncle Rupee to a pool near his home. Uncle Rupee appeared to him in the clouds and told him of Rupeeland, a magical place where he would never have to work, where he could relax all the time, and have beautiful women surrounding him at all times. The man eagerly agreed to Uncle Rupee's conditions of throwing rupees into the pool. From that moment on, he was transformed into having green tights and dubbed Tingle.
Tingle traveled through the three continents gathering funds. Each time he threw enough in the pool, it would grow into a taller and taller tower. Each time Uncle Rupee would appear. In each appearance though, Uncle Rupee went from a humble old man in a robe to wearing more and more extravagant outfits surrounded by symbols of wealth, like bodyguards and women and cats. As the tower neared it highest altitude, Uncle Rupee's encouragements became more sinister.
Tingle soon learned from the Grand Fairy that Uncle Rupee was an evil being. His idea of Rupeeland was actually a hellish world where everyone was Tingles who worked constantly to harvest rupees to satisfy Uncle Rupee's greed. Tingle was terrified by this prospect and resolved to instead defeat Uncle Rupee. He used the Super Rupees he had gained to access the Master Rupee as well as to free Pinkle using the 30 Rupee Goods he had collected. Tingle then tossed the Master Rupee into the pool and the tower immediately flew into space and crashed straight through the moon.
Uncle Rupee confronted Tingle there and showed Tingle how many rupees he had given and how many he had total. He then demanded Tingle to hand over all the rupees, but Tingle refused to give any. Outraged, Uncle Rupee engaged in battle. His first stage was a comical one with him on his sofa flanked by his bodyguards and cats, which he deployed against Tingle. On the other hand, Tingle used a special device to use rupees as ammunition against Uncle Rupee.
After his first form was defeated, Tingle transformed into a super strong version of himself, once more in green, but capable of summoning giant clouds that would spew out rupees. However he was defeated when Tingle used his rupees to turn Uncle Rupee's most powerful attack against him. In his final form - that of a giant rupee (his own head), he attempted to crush Tingle but was once more defeated. With his utter defeat, Tingle fell back to Port Town while his rupees fell to the ground as the various adults and Tingle struggled to grab as many as they could. As the children remarked about the scary expressions of the adults in their greed, a image of Uncle Rupee could be seen in the background chuckling.
Trivia
- If Tingle collects all the Rupee Goods, the ending will show Tingle himself going through all of Uncle Rupee's various stages of wealth seen throughout the game.
