Anjean is an elderly sage of the Lokomo people who appears as an important supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.

Background

Anjean was the one of the Lokomo people who served the spirits of good residing in the land (the land that eventually became the new Hyrule), with duties primarily connected to maintaining the seal on the Demon King Malladus, which was powered by energy flowing along the Spirit Tracks and the Tower of Spirits following the departure of the spirits. Anjean looked over the Tower itself and was entrusted with the special Spirit Train as well as the Spirit Flute. When the Hyrulean settlers arrived, Anjean formed a strong friendship with their leader, Tetra, and gave her the Spirit Flute so that her descendants could use it to protect Hyrule.

She was an old lady by the time of Spirit Tracks and confined to a wheelchair-like device, although she was implied to still have some strong powers at her disposal. She had an apprentice named Byrne for a while, but his lust for power caused him to betray Anjean and instead help Cole in his mission to revive the Demon King. Anjean was unable to stop them as they split the Tower into four segments and caused most of the Spirit Tracks to disappear, as well as releasing the Demon Train from the Dark Realm. The seal was weakened to the point where Anjean's energy was the only thing sustaining it. However, the young Link and the ghost of Princess Zelda (whom Anjean recognized as Tetra's granddaughter) soon came to help. Cole and Byrne had stolen Zelda's body, so Anjean warned Zelda that they were planning to resurrect Malladus in her body, which freaked Zelda out,

However, Anjean instructed them about the process that they needed to undergo to restore the Spirit Tracks as well as reuniting the tower and brought the spirit train to life so that they could have a source of transportation. So Link and Zelda's ghost set off on their journey, with Anjean providing moral support. Byrne later ambushed Link and Zelda after they obtained the final rail map high up in the tower, at which point Anjean arrived to deal with him, writing him off as an unworthy apprentice due to his treachery. She then stayed behind to deal with Byrne so that Link and Zelda could escape. The results of this skirmish are never explored beyond Anjean suffering from vague injuries as a result of this battle later on. Anjean next showed up after Malladus's resurrection, when she helped Link and Zelda's ghost to escape (with Byrne's unconscious body) aboard the spirit train. With Malladus revived, Anjean saw only one course of action and so sent Link to the Sand Temple to find the Bow of Light, as only the Light Arrows could weaken Malladus. Byrne also repented and helped them find the Compass of Light so that they could locate the Demon Train within the Dark Realm for the final battle.

When the time came for the final battle, Anjean was at first prepared to fight in their stead, but then Byrne volunteered instead while reminding her of her injuries. But Zelda reminded them that they were both badly injured, and that she and Link could take on Malladus themselves. Anjean was proud of them and materialized a new Phantom body for Zelda's ghost to possess, and she had also bestowed Link with the Lokomo Sword. Malladus was eventually destroyed by the two, but Byrne had wound up sacrificing his life during the battle. After the battle was over, Anjean arrived and assured them that Byrne was not truly gone, as his spirit was still intact without any memories of his life. She then told them that the Lokomos were supposed to protect mankind as well as the Spirit Tracks, but Link and Zelda had proven that they were no longer needed by defeating Malladus without the spirits' guidance. Thus, she transformed into a spirit and ascended to the heavens with the spirits of Byrne and the other Lokomos, saying that she would spend some time there with her "old friend" Byrne.

Trivia

• As most of the characters in Spirit Tracks have names based on train-based puns, Anjean's name is a pun on "engine", which of course is what propels a train.
• She appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
