Wario began his video game career as Mario's evil doppelganger. But in less than a generation of gaming, he transformed his career into being the star of his own series of games about collecting treasure. He is characterized by his extreme greed and his lack of social graces. He loves to beat, bully, and cheat his way into making as much money as possible.
He was differentiated even further from Mario when he received his own spinoff series starting with WarioWare. He was given a makeover and a cast of recurring characters, a first in his games. He's recently picked up his quasi-brother Waluigi as a counterpart to Luigi. Wario is also due to make his Smash Bros. debut in Super Smash Bros. Brawl this December.
