The Piantas are a race of island-dwelling people who were initially featured in Super Mario Sunshine.

Information[edit]

The Piantas are a race of beings with pear-shaped bodies. They seem to be part plant, as every Pianta has a small stalk resembling a palm tree rising from its head. Piantas also have no necks, large noses and come in a variety of colors. Within Sunshine, they are described as "mountain folk", although they have mostly appeared at island habitats. They are generally described as being "strong, sociable and curious", although some Piantas have been known to be quickly angered within the game. A Pianta's palm tree primarily provides shade from the heat of the island environments. They are usually adorned in types of grass skirts and dresses. The Pianta's full abilities are unknown, but some Piantas have been able to toss Mario far into the air. Such Piantas are referred to as Chucksters.

They have been primarily known to live throughout Isle Delfino along with the Nokis. Piantas are not exactly shown to live in a mountain, but their ancestral home of Pianta Village is atop a giant palm tree which is the highest point of the island. Their center of commerce is Delfino Plaza, which is located by the shore. There they seem to find business by catering to tourists and selling the various tropical fruits. One sole Pianta also sells sunglasses. As easygoing as their lives seem to be, the Piantas still have a system of law enforcement with police officers, a court of law and a prison (or at the least, holding cells). They are also very protective of their island and the Shine Sprites providing their sunlight. During Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr. performed mass vandalism throughout the island in the guise of Shadow Mario, which drove away the Shine Sprites. Mario, whom had just arrived on vacation, was arrested by the Piantas and was convicted for the crimes of pollution that Shadow Mario had committed. Many Piantas remained distrustful of Mario because of this, but some were more friendly. Mario was ultimately able to prove his innocence by restoring the Shine Sprites and defeating Bowser Jr. as well as his father.

Piantas also appeared in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, which showed a seedier side to them. A group of Piantas in Rogueport made up a mafia-like criminal organization known as the Pianta Syndicate. These Piantas wore suits with grass skirts, and they were initially led by Don Pianta. They were rivals with the Robbos, and Mario had to deal with Don Pianta at points to progress in his adventure. Don Pianta's daughter Francesca and henchman Frankie later tried to elope to Keelhaul Key, although Mario was able to get Don Pianta's blessing for the wedding. Don Pianta fell ill later in the game, at which point Frankie and Francesca were put in charge. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Piantas made a small appearance at the Starshine Galaxy, which was a similar environment to Isle Delfino. These Piantas were all male Chucksters.

Piantas have made minor appearances as background spectators in most Mario Kart and sports titles that have been released after Sunshine, and sometimes they are present on courses. Piantas have so far only been playable in Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers, where they batted with small palm trees and came in varieties of blue, red and yellow. Piantas were also featured in Mario Party 8 on the Goomba's Booty Boardwalk stage where some Yellow Piants could throw the player ahead several spaces, blue ones could fish pieces of candy for the player and orange female Piantas ran candy shops.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Pianta is named after the Italian word for "plant".
  • Two stickers of Piantas (one male and one female) using art from Super Mario Sunshine appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
