Background
Merlin's past is largely mysterious. He was known for being a great wizard and was King Arthur's advisor. In actuality he was a Narrator, which was the source of his powers. He constantly made sure that King Arthur never did anything stupid, like when he nearly lost his kingdom in a clearly rigged game of Poker with one of his knights, 'Sir Bob'. As punishment, Merlin cursed Sir Bob to carry and protect King Arthur's sword until the King of the Britons finally returned to reclaim his throne.
As fate would have it, Bob (who would come to be known as Excalibur) sired two sons centuries later who would eventually become rivals. Recognizing them as Bob's sons, Merlin gave them two swords he had received during his travels in the Far East, the Masamune and the Murasame. In the end the two brothers ended up nearly killing one another, at which point Merlin returned to chastise them for their foolishness. Like their father, he cursed them to be bound to their swords. He placed special conditions on their curse, though the two have never actually indulged how the curse is broken, since the two decided they quite enjoyed being immortal.
Good Timeline
It is unknown what happened to Merlin over the centuries, but he appears in an alternate timeline created when Straw Man becomes a Narrator by eating the Cheesecake of the Gods. Merlin was trapped in the Ice Pole where he was carefully guarded to prevent him from ever being awakened. Masamune, Robert Stack, and their companions managed to find Merlin and awakened him to restore Masamune's immortality before his age caught up with him and he died. Though Merlin wasn't able to do it himself, he helped Robert Stack regain his narration powers, who in turn restored Masamune's immortality. Merlin then left the fate of the world into their hands.
