Clu Clu Land is a puzzle game for the NES. The name "Clu Clu Land" is derived from the Japanese "Kuru Kuru" which means "around and around".

Story

A type of sea urchin named the Unira has stolen all the treasure in Clu Clu Land. Bubbles must retrieve the treasure.

Gameplay

The player must move around the board, trying to uncover all of the gold ingots. When they go over one, they become visible. In later levels, the player has to go over them twice for the ingots to appear and going over them once they appear will rebury them. The player can usually guess where the ingots are because they form a pattern. When all of the ingots are recovered, the player move on to the next level.

To control Bubbles, the player must press left or right to have Bubbles grab a pole to turn himself. The player can also use a sound wave to stun their enemies, which allows the player to defeat them.

Legacy

This game notably inspired the gameplay of DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber, and Bubbles even made a guest appearance as an unlockable character in the former game. Segments of the game have also been utilized for some of 9-Volt's microgames in several WarioWare games and for challenges featured in NES Remix.

It has also been referenced in the Super Smash Bros. series, where Unira has appeared as an item starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The game has also been referenced in the form of musical tracks from the series and a trophy of Bubbles in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Ports and Remakes

• Nintendo released a revised version of the game as part of the Vs. arcade system known as Vs. Clu Clu Land. This version had new puzzles and a new enemy (Boss Unira).
  • In June 2019, this version was digitally ported to the Nintendo Switch as part of Hamster's Arcade Archives line.
• A variation on the arcade version was released through the Famicom Disk System, originally known as Clu Clu Land: Welcome to New Cluclu Land and known as Clu Clu Land D outside of Japan. This version added an easy and hard mode.
• Clu Clu Land and Clu Clu Land D are both playable in Animal Crossing as well as Animal Forest.
• In 2001, the game was made available for the Sharp Zaurus series of PDAs.
• In 2003, Clu Clu Land was made available for the e-Reader.
• In 2004, Clu Clu Land was released on the Game Boy Advance in Japan as part of the Famicom Mini series.
• It has received releases for the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as part of each iteration of the Virtual Console program: for the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 and 2009, the 3DS Virtual Console in 2013 and 2014, and the Wii U Virtual Console in 2013. In Japan, it was only the Clu Clu Land D version that was released for each version.
• In May 2019, it was among the NES games made available to play as part of the Nintendo Switch Online service, with the Clu Clu Land D version being available in Japan. This
