Dratini is a an elusive serpentine dragon Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the first in a three-step evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Dragonair and Dragonite.

Information

Dratini is known as "the Mirage Pokémon" because of its obscurity. It was originally believed to be a myth until a fisherman caught one in recent times, and a small colony was found underwater. It is born large to start with and steadily sheds its skin as it gets longer. This is because it is full of life energy which builds to uncontrollable levels. Dratini is protected by a rapid waterfall while this happens. Even the young can exceed 6.5 feet.

It evolves into Dragonair at Level 30.

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Dratini could be uncommonly fished with the Super Rod at the Safari Zone, and it could also be bought as a prize at the Celadon City Game Corner in all versions save for Yellow, in which it was also less common at the Safari Zone. The Dratini was worth 2800 coins in Red/FireRed and 4600 coins in Blue/LeafGreen.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Dratini could be found by fishing at Route 45 (Gold/Silver/Crystal only), by surfing and fishing at Dragon's Den and as a prize at the Goldenrod Came Corner for 2100 coins (in all except Crystal). In Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player also received a Dratini knowing ExtremeSpeed as a prize from the Dragon Clan's Elder at the Dragon's Shrine after completing the dragon user's test. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, it could be also found by fishing at the Safari Zone's Swamp area, and it could be found through the Pokéwalker at the Blue Lake course.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Dratini could be fished at the fourth floor of Mt. Coronet. In Black and White, they could be commonly fished outside Dragonspiral Tower.

Other Games

Dratini could be photographed at the Valley area in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Pinball, it was found at Celadon City and Safari Zone. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Phobos Submarine, Endless Level 39, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the fiftieth through fifty-ninth floors of Silver Trench, the first five floors of Wyvern Hill and the fiftieth through fifty-ninth floors of Far-off Sea.

It could also be recruited in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness at the first nine basement floors of Craggy Coast and the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Almia Castle. Dratini also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Windy Prairie.

• In the Pokémon anime, Dratini was featured in one Kanto series episode that was banned from America (due to the warden wielding a gun) where it was protected by the Safari Zone's warden when Team Rocket targeted it. However, it evolved into a Dragonair and defeated Team Rocket itself, and was also shown to have its own Dratini baby. A Johto episode later showed Dratini as one of Clair's Pokémon. Team Rocket tried stealing this Dratini as well, and it also wound up evolving.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Dratini appeared within a chapter of the Red/Green/Blue arc where it attacked a child that would later be identified as Yellow. Red saved her and quickly defeated the Dratini. During the Yellow arc, a Dratini was shown in Lance's flashback which showed that a Dratini which was hurt by industrialization was part of his motivation for his plan to destroy humans.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "dragon" and a play on "tiny" or the Italian suffix "-tini", which also refers to smallness, as it is small compared to its evolved forms.
