Ness is the young boy who was featured as the main character of Earthbound. Hailing from humble origins at the town of Onett, he was called to adventure after an encounter with a fallen meteor and a bug named Buzz Buzz. Ness was the leader of the Chosen Four who would take on the mysterious alien conqueror Giygas. Over the course of his journey, he slowly met and became close friends with the other three: Paula, Jeff and Poo. He also came into conflict with his neighbor and former friend, Pokey Minch. Like most main characters of RPGs, he is a silent protagonist.

Ness is oddly identical to the previous game's protagonist, Ninten, a resemblance which is not explained. Ness has also made regular appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series, with a moveset that includes some of his friends' abilities. The most recent game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, teamed him up with his successor from Mother 3, Lucas, during its story mode.
