Bulbasaur is a Pokémon and is notable as occupying the spot of #001 in the National Pokédex. First introduced in Pokémon: Red and Blue, Bulbasaur was one of four starter Pokémon offered by Professor Oak to the Player. However if the player picked Squirtle, then the Rival would end up with Bulbasaur instead. It evolves into Ivysaur at Level 16 and later into Venusaur at Level 32, which means it evolves the fastest of the three starters in Generation I. Because it is has a type advantage against the first two gym leaders, Bulbasaur is often preferred to easily get through the first two gyms.

Despite being a Plant type Pokémon, it has a reptilian appearance and draws most of its plant-like behavior from the strange seed that is planted on its back at birth. The bulb provides it nutrients by absorbing energy from the sun and grows as the Bulbasaur grows. Though Bulbasaur is capable of walking solely on its hind legs, it becomes a pure quadruped after its first evolution. Its evolution, Ivysaur, is playable as a three-Pokémon team in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
