Ridley is a Space Pirate general that resembles a black dragon. He is a recurring enemy in the Metroid series and a major antagonist of Samus Aran. He made his original appearance in Metroid on the NES and has appeared in all but three of the games. Despite his many 'deaths', the Space Pirates continue to resuscitate him to fight again. However his feud with Samus began much earlier when he was involved in the attack on K-2L that resulted in Samus being orphaned.

In the Metroid Prime series, Ridley appears as the upgraded Meta Ridley. This version of the space dragon gave him missile attacks and increased durability. Both Ridley and his Meta form appeared as bosses in the Subspace Emissary portion of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He has also had small cameos in the background of a stage in Super Smash Bros. and in the intro movie of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
