Groudon is the armored red bestial legendary Pokémon from the third generation games that is featured as the mascot for Pokémon: Ruby Version. It forms the primarily legendary trio of the third generation Pokémon games with Kyogre and Rayquaza.

Information

Groudon is a gigantic beast with red armored skin that is said to have raised lands and spread continents in Pokémon mythology. It sleeps within magma underground and is said to cause volcanic eruptions whenever it awakens. Additionally, its fire and ground-based powers are strong enough to dispel nearby rainclouds and evaporate water with its light. This has caused Groudon to be hailed as a savior to those villagers who have suffered from bad flooding. Groudon's raging heat could also evaporate water to expand land masses, so Groudon is typically associated with land.

In the backstory of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, it was said that Groudon eventually came to battle its opposite, Kyogre, which represented the sea. The battle threatened to destroy the world, but Rayquaza, the third part of the trio, descended from the sky and broke up the fight, leading to the two being sealed in slumbers. Groudon's initial resting place was the Seafloor Caven in Ruby or Mt. Chimney in Emerald. In both games Team Magma conspired to resurrect Groudon and eventually succeeded after exposing it to the Blue Jewel. However, its powers caused droughts and extreme heat that threatened to do more harm than good to the world, so action had to be taken to seal it again. While the player immediately confronts Groudon in Ruby, in Emerald it goes on to battle Kyogre (who is awakened after Groudon) until Rayquaza breaks up their fight again, and Groudon goes to its new resting place.

Mainstream Games

In Ruby, Groudon appears within the Cave of Origin after being awakened by Maxie and Team Magma, and it must be battled in order to progress through the game in addition to only being battled once. In Emerald, it will instead appear in the Terra Cave after the event in which Rayquaza breaks up Groudon and Kyogre's fight.

Groudon can also be captured in SoulSilver, where it can be summoned to a room within the Embedded Tower located on Route 47 if the player has a Red Orb (which is given by Mr. Pokémon after the player receives both the National Pokédex and a Kanto starter from Professor Oak).

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Groudon can be battled and caught on the Bonus Field of the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it can be acquired through Random Agent Cards or at Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Groudon is found on the third and bottom basement floor of the Magma Cavern Pit. In Pokémon Ranger, Groudon is found at the Jungle Relic during a mission.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, a fake Groudon created by Uxie initially appears as boss of the Steam Cave, and the real Groudon appears as the boss of the Shimmer Desert in a Secret Wonder Mail Mission where it guards the Terra Cymbal. Groudon also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Lava Zone.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Groudon appeared in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Once summoned, Groudon (which is large enough to take up most of the screen) will stand still and use Overheat, radiating enough to set anyone that touches it aflame as well as sending them flying. Groudon has also been represented by a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the Wii U game and two stages of a Primary Spirit in Ultimate. The initial spirit was an Advanced-rank Spirit of Groudon, and after reaching Level 99, it could be enhanced into an Ace-rank Spirit of Primal Groudon, which came with an added resistance to fire and explosion attacks. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Groudon's Spirit would possess a giant Bowser and fight in a stage with a lava floor.

Other Media

• Groudon was featured in a two-part episode of the Pokémon anime which focused on the battle between Groudon and Kyogre. Initially Team Aqua had acquired the sleeping Groudon and offered him to Team Magma in a trade, but Archie went mad while controlling Kyogre after it awakened. Pikachu wound up controlling Groudon after accidentally merging with the Blue Orb, which led to the two battling until one attack causes the Red Orb to be rejected from Archie's body, which in turn leads to the Blue Orb splitting from Pikachu. With no one controlling the two Pokémon, they then part in peace and return to their slumbering places. A fake Groudon also appears in the sixth Pokémon movie, where a former Team Magma scientist uses a wish on Jirachi to create it, but it is made of pure evil and winds up being destroyed by Jirachi at the end. Groudon has also made several smaller cameo appearances.
• Groudon also appeared in Pokémon Adventures manga, where it was awakened and controlled by Maxie in battle with Kyogre at the climax of the Ruby/Sapphire arc. At first the gym leaders Wallace, Brawly and Roxanne attempted to battle it, but they wound up being distracted by members of Team Magma. In the end it was Rayquaza that was able to drive the two away as in Emerald.

Trivia

• The first part of its name seems to be a pun on ground, and the "don" seems to be referring to a ruler, this indicating Groudon's position as the ruler of the land.
• Groudon is the heaviest Pokémon currently in existence.
• Groudon shares the title of Continent Pokémon with Torterra.
