The Ice Climbers are a team of two characters named Nana & Popo who served as the main characters of the NES game Ice Climber. Though they are young, they are strong warriors and excellent mountaineers. How they relate to each other has never been clarified, although there have been some minor implications that they are lovers.
Background[edit]
When a condor decided to steal all of the eggplants their the village, it was up to Popo and Nana to get them back. Fighting their way past polar bears and topi, they managed to make it to the top of the mountain and defeat the condor.
Abilities[edit]
The Ice Climbers' main ability is using their hammers. With the hammer, they can break through ice or defeat their opponents. They also have the ability to direct icy winds and create small icicles in Smash Bros.. Perhaps more important than any of this, however, is their ability to work as a team.
In the Smash Bros. games, the Ice Climbers have the following special moves:
- Standard Special Move: Ice Shot- Each Climber fires a chunk of ice that will slide across the ground.
- Side Special Move: Squall Hammer- The Climber(s) spin around while swinging their hammers, and continuing to press the special move button will cause them to slowly ascend into the air.
- Up Special Move: Belay- This move is only truly useful with both climbers active, as the second Climber will leap up further with a rope between them, causing the primary Climber to leap up after the other.
- Down Special Move: Blizzard- Each Climber fires out an icy wind that will freeze any character it touches. If both Climbers are active, they will each fire in a different direction, effectively protecting them from both sides. If this move is performed in the air, both Climbers fire in the same direction.
- Final Smash: Iceberg- The Ice Climbers follow a giant Iceberg that temporarily covers part of the stage, hurting and freezing anyone nearby while providing an obstacle for those navigating the stage.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- The Ice Climbers appear as playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They were omitted from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U due to the technical limitations that would come with implementing them into the 3DS version. In Ultimate, they were unlockable characters who could be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening them in Adventure Mode (where they were found by the northwestern icy mountain area of the Light Realm).
- They have also been represented by three unlockable trophies in Melee, two trophies (one being for their Final Smash) and a sticker of Nana in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.
- Within "The Subspace Emissary", the Adventure Mode of Brawl, the Ice Climbers appeared on the Glacial Mountain stage, where they were climbing the mountain and helped Meta Knight to also scale the mountain. They then stood back during the battle between Meta Knight and Lucario and were knocked from the mountain after the Halberd pushed the Great Fox into it. The Ice Climbers landed safely by Mario and the main party, then joined with them for the final battles.
- In Ultimate, their Classic Mode route was called "Dues for Days". Its theme was opponents who worked together as duos in their own series. The final boss of the mode was another duo, Master Hand and Crazy Hand.
- The Ice Climbers have also appeared in games utilizing parts of the original Ice Climber for minigames or microgames such as 9-Volt's Portal:Wario WarioWare microgames, Tetris DS, Daigasso! Band Brothers and NES Remix.
- In Super Mario Maker, Popo and Nana appear together as a costume that Mario can transform into when using a Mystery Mushroom. Their costume is unlocked by completing the Event Course called "Popo & Nana's Climbing Challenge".
Trivia[edit]
- In the Smash Bros. games, they are shown to be left-handed.
