Karst is one of the two Proxian antagonists who were featured in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Her partner is Agatio, and both of them worked under Alex.
Background[edit]
Karst was part of the Mars Clan that lived in Prox. She was a fiery and powerful warrior, although she was overshadowed by her older sister, Menardi. Karst was still capable enough that she was even able to gauge others' strength just by looking at them. The Mars Clan eventually sent out its most powerful fighters, Saturos and Menardi, to revive Alchemy by lighting the beacons of the four elemental lighthouses. The less powerful Karst and Agatio remained behind and helped them by providing research on the lighthouses which apparently were an invaluable aid to the other Proxians in their quest. Saturos and Menardi were later declared missing, at which point Agatio and Karst became the search party that had to find them.
They set out in a ship, but their route back to Prox through the Western Sea was later blocked off as a result of the shifts resulting from Venus Lighthouse being activated. They eventually docked at Indra, and Karst went to several towns alone looking for information on Menardi's whereabouts. She eventually recognized Felix, whom had spent three years in Prox and who was part of Saturos's party. Felix's group let them know the sad truth, that Saturos and Menardi had died after a battle with Isaac, who was trying to prevent the lighthouses from being activated. Karst was enraged by this news and sought revenge on Isaac. She resented the others for not being concerned with hurting Isaac. Karst returned to the ship later on, and at some point the two were joined by Alex. Alex was another former companion of Saturos and Menardi, who wanted to help them avenge the fallen Proxians and light the remaining two lighthouses. The three of them then confronted Felix's group at Champa, where it became clear that Alex was using them as muscle to intimidate Felix's group into accelerating their lighting of the beacons. Karst went along with this role, despite her confusion and frustration at Alex's cryptic motivations.
Agatio and Karst then went ahead to the Jupiter Lighthouse, where they finally ran into Isaac's group. Against Alex's orders, they set a trap which wound up snagging two of Isaac's team members. They then were able to fight the more manageable duo of Isaac and Ivan, and they defeated them. Isaac still showed enough strength to prove himself a formidable threat, so they were ready to give him the killing blow when Felix arrived to stop them. It was pointed out by Kraden that Karst and Agatio were weakened enough from their fight that they could not take down Felix's group, which also had larger numbers. They reluctantly spared Isaac, and when Agatio questioned why Karst would let Isaac go despite her anger at him, she let Agatio know that she was still filled with rage about Menardi, but not so much to be blinded from it. Karst and Agatio still required that Felix at least take the Mars Star from Isaac and go ahead to light the beacon, and they went ahead of him to the lighthouse's aerie to witness the lighthouse's awakening to make sure he went through with it.
They revealed their true colors after the beacon was lit by Felix, as they decided to turn on him and stole the Mars Star. This was because the last lighthouse was the Mars Lighthouse near Prox, and they thought that as native Proxians they could handle the lighthouse by themselves. She still agreed that despite his death, Felix's parents who were kept as hostages in Prox would be released afterwards. Agatio and Karst tried killing Felix in battle at this point, but he was rejoined by the rest of his teammates. If Felix won, they tried taunting Felix into killing them until Alex intervened and healed them enough to walk. If they won, Alex would intervene to prevent them from killing Felix. Regardless, the duo then departed the lighthouse with Alex due to how weakened they were. Karst was angry at Alex and considered him to have betrayed them, and they parted ways with him before setting off to Prox. They made their way to the Mars Lighthouse and attempted to navigate it, but they were unable to progress through the tower due to everything being frozen over.
Karst and Agatio were confronted by the ominous Wise One, who told them that they lacked the will to go on any further and forced them to transform into a pair of mindless Flame Dragons that wound up being frozen in ice. Isaac and Felix's combined group battled the dragons after they were defrosted and critically wounded them. The dragons reverted into Agatio and Karst, who were left disoriented and in critical condition. They became cold, despite Proxians' natural immunity to the cold, and it became apparent that they were dying. Karst and Agatio slowly recalled what led them there and eventually recognized Felix. Agatio passed the Mars Star on to him, and both of them pleaded with him to ignite the beacon for them. Karst knew that her death would not be in vain if she could see the beacon being lit and was last seen murmuring about how she had forgotten how warm people's hands were until feeling Felix's hands. It is uncertain how much longer they stayed alive, but the Proxians' comments at the end imply that they did indeed perish.
Abilities[edit]
As a member of the Mars Clan, Karst is naturally a Mars Adept with skills in various fire-based Psynergy moves. One of her most powerful is Supernova. She also has the Venus-based Death Scythe attack (which her sister also knew), which is accompanied by an afterimage of the Grim Reaper and could possibly kill with one strike. Her only status-affecting moves are Break and Djinnfest, and she also has the Healing Aura ability which could recover both her and Agatio's health. Karst wields a scythe in battle, similarly to her sister (although Karst's is closer to a normal scythe).
Trivia[edit]
- She acts as a replacement for Menardi, as implied by their relation.
- In Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, depictions of Agatio and Karst appear on cardboard targets within the Psynergy Training Grounds, which depict an in-universe retelling of the first two games.
- Karst can detect when someone is reading her mind and will be annoyed by it.
