Koffing is a poisonous and gaseous Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Weezing.

Information[edit]

Koffing has a thin and flimsy body which is filled with gases that can cause sniffles, coughs and teary eyes. The gases are lighter than air, which keeps Koffing's balloon-like body constantly afloat. Koffing contains toxic gases that can be seen through its skin from a close range. They mix their own toxins with garbage in order to set off a chemical reaction which creates a more powerful toxic gas.

When a Koffing is agitated, it raises the toxicity of its gases and then jets them from all over its body. They are also dangerous because the variety of toxic gases within their bodies can expand and explode at any moment, especially in hot places. The gases both smell and are explosive. As they are poisonous as well as explosive, Koffing are often used by criminal organizations such as Team Rocket. Koffing evolves into Weezing at Level 35. This evolution is actually a fusion of two (or in rare cases three) Koffing and has been described as a sudden mutation.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, they are found at the Pokémon Mansion, being more common in Red/FireRed and rarer in Blue/LeafGreen. In FireRed/LeafGreen, there is also a rare chance of finding one while surfing at Celadon City.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Koffing commonly appeared at Burned Tower, and five Koffing also appeared in the trap floors of the Team Rocket HQ at Mahogany Town. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Koffing was also found at the Safari Zone's Marshland area. Koffing could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Town Outskirts course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Koffing appeared at Fiery Path, being common in Ruby and Emerald but rare in Sapphire. In Platinum, they could be found at Stark Mountain.

Other Games[edit]

Koffing could be caught at Cinnabar Island in Pokémon Pinball. In Pokémon Snap, Koffing could be photographed at the Cave area. Among the line of Pokémon e-Reader games, Koffing was featured as an obstacle in the "Night Flight" and "Flower Power" minigames. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it could be caught at the Volcano on the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Channel, Koffing appeared outside the Ruins of Truth in the daytime and on cloudy or snowy nights.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Koffing could be recruited at the ninth through sixteenth floors of Sky Tower, the seventh-first through seventy-fifth floors of Wish Cave and the sixty-fifth through seventieth floors of Joyous Tower. A non-playable Koffing also appeared in these games as part of Team Skull and acted as the boss of Beach Cave. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at Mystifying Forest and Mystery Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Waterworks. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Chroma Ruins.

It appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Rasp Cavern and Ice Temple. Koffing also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Koffing was first featured in the original Super Smash Bros., as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item, and it attacked by releasing poison gas around it. It was replaced by Weezing in the following game, but it also appeared as an enemy in different modes of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U; in the 3DS game, it was an enemy faced in the Smash Run mode, while in the Wii U game, it was an enemy in the Smash Tour mode that would obscure parts of the board for all players. Koffing's appearance in the 3DS/Wii U installment was accompanied by a trophy.

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime series, Koffing was initially featured as the main Pokémon of James of Team Rocket. It was complemented by Jessie's Ekans and specialized in creating smokescreens. Partway through the Kanto series, Koffing and Ekans both evolved at the same time out of a desire to be more useful to James and Jessie. Other Koffing have also made occasional appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Koffing was featured as one of Koga's Pokémon. During the Yellow arc, he used Koffing's smoke to relate secret messages to Blue during their battle with Agatha. In the HeartGold/SoulSilver saga, Petrel has been shown to have multiple Koffing at his disposal.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a simple play on "coughing".
