Lance is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi who is a knight with a love for strategy.

Background[edit]

Lance is a foreigner who arrived in the land of Pherae shortly before war with Bern broke out. He possesses a masterful knowledge of war tactics and regularly reads books on war tactics and plays strategy games to test his skill. Despite his fervor, Lance is an extremely humble knight that often questions his usefulness in the Pherae army due to having spent so little time in the country.

At the opening of the war, Lance was at Pherae with Eliwood when the castle was attacked by bandits. Since Roy was soon to arrive, Merlinus dispatched Lance with a message warning Roy of the impending attack. After delivering the message, he joined Roy's ranks in "Chapter 1: Dawn of Destiny" to help retake the castle From that point he became a permanent member of Roy's army, alongside fellow knight Allen of whom he was close friends with.

Following the war he returned to Pherae with Roy. He lent his hand in helping to rebuild the wartorn land and provide his advice to Roy. He was known for never losing his cool and confronting Roy if he felt his lord was making a mistake.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Lance is capable of having support conversations with six other characters.

  • Roy- In their first conversation Lance voices his concern for Roy's safety and in the subsequent conversation, confronts Roy about how it is unwise for him as the leader to position himself on the front lines. Roy explains that people wouldn't follow him if he didn't lead them directly into battle and says that perhaps he is a poor leader. In their final conversation, Lance tells Roy that perhaps it is best for Roy to do things his way and that it his charisma and heart that makes people follow him.
  • Wolt- Wolt interrupts Lance while he is deep in thought and tells him that he wants to learn from him how to fight. In the next conversation Lance tells Wolt how he is keeping a record of the battle and every move of both ally and enemy, which amazes Wolt. In their final conversation, Wolt tells Lance that he has finished reading the book on war tactics that Lance lent him. Lance then offers him another book by the same author, this one in 24 volumes.
  • Marcus- In their first conversation Marcus inquires as to how Lance is doing and tells him that he has something valuable to offer. In the next conversation Marcus explains that it is because he is an outsider that can offer other views to Roy when he takes the throne. In their final conversation, Marcus asks Lance to take over his position, which Lance reluctantly agrees to, but points out that Marcus has a long time before that will happen.
  • Allen- Allen asks how Lance is faring in battle and says that thought he lagged behind last time, he'll be sure to surpass him next time. In the next conversation, Lance tells Allen that if they should be in a losing battle, that Allen should take Roy and flee while he acts as a decoy to the enemy. Allen is shocked by that and says that he's just as important as everyone and that he shouldn't just throw his life away. In the final conversation Lance admits that he was wrong and Allen vows that if they do lose, that Lance won't be alone in staying behind to buy time.
  • Lott- In their first conversation, Lott and Lance introduce theirselves to one another and have a conversation about the oddities of the weapons triangle. In the following conversation, the two play a game of strategy (modeled after the Fire Emblem series) where Lott loses, but Lance tells him that his ability to see his mistakes makes him a better player than Allen, who usually loses in 2 turns. In the final conversation, Lott asks Lance what the odds of winning are. Lance answers that Roy's masterful use of strategy gives Lance the confidence to say they could never lose.
  • Clarine- In the first conversation, Lance formally introduces himself to the princess, who is taken aback by his respect, but quickly says that he does not compare to her own knights. In the next conversation, Clarine orders Lance to personally protect her, a request that Lance refuses by saying that he cannot have two masters. Clarine quickly claims that she was testing Lance's loyalty and that he succeeded. In the final conversation, Clarine gives Lance permission to kiss her hand and tells him this is to show the difference in her status. She is shocked however that is not disappointed by this.

Other Appearances[edit]

  • Lance made an appearance in the Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi manga and was featured as one of the main characters for one volume's storyline, appearing before the rest of Roy's army. In this volume, Lance had gotten permission from Roy to stay at Ostia in order to fight off a rebellion started by Khuzard, whom had been his old friend. Al lent his aid and managed to end the rebellion in a way that fit Khuzard's pure intentions. He was shown to have rejoined Roy's army later on and had a mostly minor presence for the remainder of the series.

Trivia[edit]

  • Lance is the "Green Knight" of the game and has high skills and speed, whereas Allen is the "Red Knight" and has high strength and defense.
  • There is a possible name reference to him in a Support conversation of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance; when Ilyana tries to guess Zihark's name, one of the names she tries is "Lance".
