Latias is a red legendary bird Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is an exclusively female species and forms a pair with Latios, which is its male counterpart.

Information

Latias is a highly intelligent Pokémon that can understand human speech and is highly sensitive to the emotions of people. It can also communicate using telepathy. However, Latias rarely make contact with people or other Pokémon. They tend to disappear when sensing enemies and form small herds consisting of only a few members. Latias's body is covered in a glass-like down which can refract light so that the Pokémon can alter its appearance or appear to be invisible. If a Latias senses hostility, it will ruffle all of its feathers and cry shrilly to intimidate the foe.

Mainstream Games

Within the third generation games, the location of Latias and Latios depending on the version. In all versions one of the Eon Pokémon would roam Hoenn after the Elite Four was completed, with a sighting of it being reported on the television, while the other was found on Southern Island, which could only be reached using the event item called Eon Ticket. In Pokémon: Ruby Version, Latias was the one at Southern Island, while in Sapphire it was a roaming Pokémon. Emerald allowed the player to choose as after watching the television, the player could pick whether the Pokémon in the report was red or blue. Picking "red" would of course make Latias into the roaming Pokémon, and picking "blue" would keep it at Southern Island.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, depending on the version one Pokémon would appear as a roaming Pokémon in Kanto, while the other Pokémon would appear outside Pewter City Museum after obtaining the event item Enigma Stone and having it analyzed to see it is a Soul Dew. Steven Stone witnesses the latter battle. In HeartGold, Latias is the roaming Pokémon, while in SoulSilver it is obtained through the event. The Eon Pokémon seemed to be attracted to Kanto from Hoenn due to the presence of a Soul Dew.

Other Games

In Pokémon Channel, Latias appeared at Cobalt Coast on cloudy mornings. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it could randomly appear on the Sapphire Field, and one also acted as the Ball Saver for the field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was obtained through Random Agent Cards and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the bottom floor of Pitfall Valley and freely joined the player without a battle. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the tenth basement floor of Spacial Rift or the nineteenth basement floor of Happy Outlook if the player had a Mystery Part or Secret Slab. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Tilikule Island and Rand's House. Latias also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Beach Zone.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Latias and Latios have appeared together as a pair of Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item in each game starting with Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When summoned, they would fly back and forth across the screen at high speed and at several different angles, using Steel Wing to damage any opponents that they hit.
  • Latias and Latios have also been represented together as a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game, a Smash Tour item (allowing the player to choose an opponent to team up with for a battle) in the Wii U game and an Ace-rank Support Spirit (granting immunity to strong winds) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of Latias and Latios would possess a pair of Charizard duplicates that could move at uncontrollable speeds, and the battle would start with Latias and Latios being released from a Poké Ball.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Latias and Latios were most prominently featured in the fifth movie, where they were the targets being sought by Annie and Oakley. Ash's friends teamed up with the Eon Pokémon's friends Bianca and Lorenzo to protect them. A Latias and Latios also helped Pikachu's group find a treasure in a Pikachu short, and one special episode showed a Nurse Joy at Pewter City owning Latias.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Latias and Latios were featured in the Emerald arc where they acted as Emerald's companions in order to help protect Jirachi. Latias was able to use her ability to assume human female forms and gather information for Emerald throughout the arc. They were never seen in battle and returned to Southern Island once Jirachi was safe at the end of the arc.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a play on "lateo" (a Latin word meaning "lay hidden"). The "a" used in the ending is to reflect that the Pokémon is female.
