Lorenz is a character who appears as a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi, Book One of Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, and as a boss in Book Two of Monshou no Nazo.

Background[edit]

Book One[edit]

Lorenz originally lived at Talys and helped a youthful chief, Mostyn, to unite the tribes as the kingdom of Talys. While Mostyn became Talys's king, Lorenz went on to become one of the most powerful generals in Grust, although the two remained close friends. When the War of Darkness broke out, Lorenz was disgusted when Grust's king bowed easily to the Dolhr Empire, despite Lorenz's attempts to persuade him otherwise. He did not want to betray his country, so he fought for the empire. However, in Chapter 20 (16 SNES), he could be persuaded to switch sides by Mostyn's daughter Caeda (and also by Marth in the DS version), who convinced him that he would not truly be betraying Grust if defeating the Dolhr Empire was in the country's best interests.

Once the war ended, Lorenz was given free reign of Grust by Princess Nyna and became the regent of Grust's heirs, Yubello and Yumina, after retrieving them from Wendell in Khadein.

Book Two[edit]

Over the next three years, Lorenz faced much friction from the Archanean empire, who wanted Lorenz to hand over Yubello and Yumina. Lorenz, seeing the new emperor Hardin as having been corrupted, refused and was banished. The corrupt Commander Lang was put in charge of Grust in his place, and Lorenz started a resistance force to protect the twin heirs and oppose Lang's rule. In Chapter 1, Lorenz was already heavily wounded from battle when Ogma was sent by King Mostyn to help him. Lorenz asked Ogma to escape with the children due to their hopeless situation, but they refused to leave without Lorenz and Ogma instead went off to kill Lang. Marth's army was sent to quell the resistance, and Lorenz was fatally wounded in the battle, although Lorenz did not seem to bare a grudge against Marth due to Hardin's manipulation. He told Marth that Lang had been sent to provoke him into rebellion and that Hardin was no longer the man he used to be, asking Marth to take care of Yumina and Yubello. In his last words, he called out to the citizens of Grust.
