Marilyn is one of the three Shadow Sirens who appear as recurring enemies in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Background

Marilyn is the largest of the three, but the middle sibling of them all. She is described as the 'strong silent type' since she rarely speaks. The Shadow Sirens themselves are full of mystery, seeming to have existed for the last thousand years - or at least, Beldam has. As servants to the Shadow Queen, they spent their time towards working towards her freedom. At what point Marilyn and Vivian came into the plot is unknown, but it is reasonable to assume it was not recent. When their alliance formed with the X-Nauts is unknown, but it is reasonable to assume that it was a response to the ever approaching opening of the Thousand-Year Door. At which point, Beldam and her two sisters became 'servants' of Grodus. The three share a rather strange relationship. Beldam is the alpha leader of the group, Marilyn is the quiet follower, and Vivian is always the one sent for the odd jobs. Marilyn's unquestionably loyal and never argues, so she never is a victim of Beldam's limited patience. As Goombella herself says, it's hard to get a good read on her.

The Shadow Sirens were sent to defeat Mario, entrusted with a portrait of the plumber so they could find and defeat him. As usual with them, Beldam lost the portrait of Mario, but blamed it on Vivian. As such they let Mario pass by unnoticed, but soon found out his identity and engaged him in battle. Though soundly defeated there at Boggly Woods, they were soon redeployed to fight him at Twilight Town. They were supposed to use a special bomb, but Beldam once more lost it and sent Vivian to fetch it. Suffering from too much verbal abuse, Vivian joined Mario's gang. But soon after, the two remaining sirens bump into Doopliss. The duplighost is initiated into the group and sure enough becomes the new brunt of Beldam's nagging and cruelty. They try to stop Mario at the Palace of Shadow once again, but are soundly defeated. Before the Shadow Queen defeats Mario, she reveals that Beldam is her servant. The Shadow Sirens had joined the X-Nauts only to the free the Shadow Queen, rather than for any reward. Beldam was revealed to be over a millenia old, implying that Marilyn is quite likely just as old. Like Beldam, she 'reforms' after the Shadow Queen was defeated, but it was more likely her just following Beldam around than any actual change.

Marilyn is physically strong and also specializes in lightning-based magic.
