Mesprit is one of the three legendary lake Pokémon that were featured in the fourth generation games. It is associated with emotion and is related to Uxie and Azelf.

Information[edit]

These three Pokémon were created by Arceus early on to control Dialga and Palkia, and it is believed that they were all born from the same egg. They effectively bound time and space, and they could do so by creating a Red Chain with crystals made in their bodies. Out of the three of them, Mesprit considered to be the Being of Emotion, and it taught humans the nobility of sorrow, pain and joy. Mesprit is connected specifically to the birth of emotions, and it is said then when it flew, people realized the joy and sadness of living. Like the other lake guardians, Mesprit usually slumbers at the bottom of its lake. However, Mesprit's spirit is said to leave its body and fly on the water's surface. One of the myths told in the fourth generation also implies that touching a Mesprit will cause one's emotions to be drained away in the next three days.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Mesprit lived at Sinnoh's Lake Verity and was located the closest to the game's starting point at Twinleaf Town. It was initially captured by Team Galactic after they lured them out of hiding by set off their Galactic Bomb at Lake Valor, and they used all three of the guardians to make a Red Chain (as well as second artificial Red Chain in Platinum). Lucas/Dawn later set them free, and they worked together to destroy the Red Chain to stop Cyrus's attempt to control Dialga or Palkia in Diamond/Pearl. In Platinum, they were unable to break both chains due to the combined power of Dialga and Palkia, but they were able to act as guides in the Distortion World afterwards. Mesprit then returned to its cave in Lake Verity. Mesprit was the only one of the trio that could not be battled directly, as once the player arrived it would instead depart and become a roaming Pokémon, wandering across Sinnoh until defeated or captured by Lucas/Dawn.

Other Games[edit]

Mesprit played a role in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, where it guarded a Time Gear at Quicksand Cave's Underground Lake and could be recruited after completing the main storyline. It also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Silent Forest and Windy Prairie, but only when playing on EX Mode.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Uxie made a cameo appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at the Spear Pillar stage. Within the stage, Uxie had a chance of appearing in the background (along with the other lake guardians) and would eventually teleport away without any effect on gameplay. In Brawl, its appearance was accompanied by a trophy. In Ultimate, the three lake guardian Pokémon shared an Ace-rank Primary Spirit that also boosted PSI attack power. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf would possess a trio of Mewtwo (with color variations to match their respective colors) in a battle where their special attacks had enhanced power, and they would heal themselves after taking high damage.

In Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Mesprit was the most prominently featured of the lake guardians during the Sinnoh series, where it formed a bond with Dawn. It had a cameo appearance in the series's first episode, where Dawn spotted its apparition at Lake Verity (which is similar to Ash's sightings of Ho-Oh and Suicune in first episodes of previous series). The lake guardians were featured during a three-part episode which contained the climax of Team Galactic's plan. Mesprit warned Dawn of the impending danger in a dream and was awakened from its slumber when the Galactic Bomb was activated. It and Uxie tried to help Azelf, but they were both captured by Pokémon Hunter J. Mesprit and Uxie were still able to perform a Future Sight attack that later destroyed J's ship. Mesprit formed a psychic link with Dawn, who was able to free it during the battle at the Spear Pillar. Mesprit then worked with Dawn (while the other guardians paired with the other members of Ash's group) until Dialga and Palkia were stopped, at which point it returned to Lake Verity.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, the story of the lake guardians was depicted in the Diamond/Pearl arc and mostly followed the game storyline. Diamond was the one to form a bond with Mesprit due to being emotionall calm, and he had seen it as a child. The lake guardians were captured and used to make the Red Chain, and they were last seen when Diamond, Pearl and Platina worked together to free them from Team Galactic's headquarters.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name seems to be a combination of "me" (as the other guardians' names appear to also use the pronouns "you" and "us") with "esprit" (which is French for "spirit").
