Mohn is a Pokémon character who appeared in the seventh generation games (Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon) as the man running the Poké Pelago. He is also an amnesiac man who was previously a Pokémon researcher and the husband of Lusamine.

Background[edit]

Mohn was originally a Pokémon researcher known as Professor Mohn. He married Lusamine, the president of the Aether Foundation, and together they had two children named Gladion and Lillie. Mohn's research confirmed the existence of Ultra Wormholes and Ultra Beasts. An accident during one experiment caused Mohn to be sucked into an Ultra Wormhole, leaving behind only a weakened Cosmog and his research papers about Nihilego. His disappearance had a profound impact on his family and seemed to be the route of Lusamine's behavior shifting for the worse, as she became fixated on Ultra Space (particularly during Sun/Moon), and she became negligent and mean towards their children.

The exact process of events is unknown, but Mohn ended up back in Alola with seemingly no memories of his past life beyond his name. He ended up founding the Poké Pelago, a series of islands located near Alola that were designated specifically for the unused Pokémon of trainers, where they could grow, develop further and perform tasks instead of simply sitting in PC boxes. Hosting this mode was his primary purpose in the seventh generation games. There was initially only one island available in the Pelago, and he enlisted the help of Elio/Selene in developing the islands with the help of their Pokémon. After Poké Pelago's development was complete, Mohn enthusiastically thanked Elio/Selene and gave them ten Rainbow Beans.

He made several appearances outside of the Pelago in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. He first appeared in Route 7 after Elio/Selene had cleared Kiawe's trial and had learned to ride Charizard, to tell them how to access the Poké Pelago. Mohn also appeared in a special scene that could trigger after Gladion was defeated in a Title Defense battle, in which Mohn visited Aether Paradise and spoke with Lusamine. He was aware of her position within Aether, as he referred to her as Madam President, but he showed no signs of remembering his past there. Mohn commended Aether's facilities and the care they took of their Pokémon while also drawing comparisons to the Poké Pelago. Lusamine did express concern for Pokémon who were kept in PC boxes, which caused Mohn to consider expanding the Poké Pelago in order to look after more boxed Pokémon, and he suggested that they work together on that in the future. Before he left, Lusamine had him confirm that this was his first visit to Aether Paradise, which was her way of confirming that he did not remember the past. After he left, Gladion showed up and asked Lusamine if she was okay leaving things like that, and she indicated that she was content with how happy he now seemed from his smile.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Mohn was initially mentioned during the Sun/Moon-based series and occasionally made flashback appearances, some of which were caused by the illusions of Gladion's Zoroark. He was known as a great trainer who had his own Z-Ring and was in the process of trying to reactivate a Shiny Magaerna that he had discovered so that it would take care of Lillie, when he disappeared in an Ultra Wormhole. He was initially presumed dead, but after he failed to appear in the the mist created by Tapu Fini, they started to consider that he was alive. Mohn eventually turned up alive during the Pokémon Journeys series, in which it was shown that he was living at the Crown Tundra of the Galar region. Amnesiac and bearded, he was living with a Nihilego that tricked him into thinking that it was his daughter Lillie. Lusamine's family eventually discovered him and awakened his memories by showing him his own reflection. The family was thus reunited, and Mohn caught the Nihilego so that it could be a proper part of the family.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mohn made an appearance during the Sun/Moon arc. In the arc's backstory, it was shown that Mohn had given an island to Sun's great-grandfather in hopes of using it to fulfill his dreams of opening a Poké Pelago. Mohn disappeared soon afterwards, and the island was later bought out by the Aether Foundation, who used it to build Aether Paradise. At one point in the arc, Mina encountered Mohn on Exeggutor Island. It was shown that he had lost all of his memories, but he still had a pendent of his family that he gave to Mina. The pendant was passed onto Lillie, showing her that her father was still alive, and she later used that information to snap Lusamine out of her fusion with Nihilego.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is named after a German word for "poppy".
  • Mohn is alluded to by Lusamine in Pokémon Masters EX. She mentioned that she sometimes thought of him while living happily with their children on Pasio, and that she used to just hope that he was alive and happy out there, but now she wanted to show him how much their children had grown.
