Nidoran is a small Poison-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation games. It is notable as the first example in which a Pokémon is divided into different species by its gender. The male version is Nidoran♂.

Information

Nidoran is a small Pokémon that is dangerous due to the venemous barbs on its body. The female version has smaller horns than the male, and they are usually mild-mannered. They avoid combat unless they are threatened to the point that they will torment their foes with their poison spikes. Its poison is actual quite dangerous and even slight contact could have fatal results.

Nidoran evolves into Nidorina at Level 16, and the final level of its evolutionary chain is Nidoqueen. Interestingly, it is the only Pokémon in its evolutionary line capable of breeding, as neither Nidorina nor Nidoqueen have been known to leave eggs.

		FireRed	Though small, it must be treated with caution because of its powerfully toxic barbs. The female has smaller horns.

In Pokémon: Red, Blue and Yellow, Nidoran appears at Route 22 and the Safari Zone. In Red and Blue it could also be claimed by trading a male Nidoran to a trainer on Route 5, while in Yellow it additionally could be found on Routes 2, 9 and 10. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they could be found at Route 3 and Safari Zone. The female version is most common in Blue and LeafGreen, being less common in Yellow and rare in Red and FireRed.

In Gold, Silver, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they could be commonly found at Routes 35 and 36. In Crystal, they were located at National Park. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they also appeared in the Savannah area of the Safari Zone. It is also possible to catch female Nidoran in the Refreshing Field course of the Pokéwalker, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, female Nidoran appeared at Route 205 when the Pokéradar was used. They also could be found at White Forest in White Version.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, they could be caught at Viridian City and Safari Zone. A female Nidoran is also shown as one of Gary's Pokémon in Pokémon Puzzle League during the first battle with him, but it evolves into Nidoqueen by the second battle. In Pokémon Trozei!, it showed up at Endless Level 28, Forever Level 28, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, they appeared on the first three floors of Thunderwave Cave, while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness they appeared at the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest and the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle. Nidoran also showed up in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower.

In Other Media

• Nidoran have made occasional appearances throughout the Pokémon anime, and one episode featured a pair of Nidoran of the opposite gender who were in love. Their trainers forbade it due to being feuding enemies, but they saw their errors by the end of the episode and permitted their romance, at which point both Nidoran evolved.
• In the Pokémon Adventures, a female Nidoran was shown as one of Green's Pokémon near the end of the Red/Blue arc. It later evolved by the time of the FireRed/LeafGreen arc.

Trivia

• Part of its name may be derived from "needle" or "ni", the Japanese word for two which would represent the two very different versions of Nidoran. "Ran" may also come from the Japanese name for an orchid that could be either blue or purple, just like Nidoran itself.
