Oleana is a Pokémon researcher who acts as one of the antagonists of Pokémon Sword and Shield, serving the main antagonist Rose.

Background

Oleana was a researcher of Dynamax energy who became the vice president of Macro Cosmos as well as the secretary to its president, Chairman Rose. Little else was known of her background. Oleana usually appeared to be humorless and stern. She was easily exasperated by the chairman's tendency to goof off and would berate him to focus on his task at a given time. Despite her impatience with him and her usual disposition, Oleana was actually fanatically devoted to Rose and could be driven to passionate displays of emotion related to him. She was one of Rose's confidants, who knew of his plan to awaken Eternatus with the power of the wishing stars, and she did what she could to help move his plan along.

Throughout Sword/Shield, Oleana was often seen with Rose and reminded him of appointments that she had to get to. At one point, she took Rose's ward Bede aside and spoke to him in private. According to Opal's suspicions, it was she who manipulated Bede into attacking the mural at Stow-on-Side, although it was never made clear whether or not Rose was involved in that incident as well.

Oleana took direct action during the Championship Cup. Leon had gone into a meeting with Rose, and Oleana wanted to ensure that the meeting was not interrupted. She tried to keep Victor/Gloria and others from interfering by hiding the monorail key with a member of the League Staff who was planted by her, comparing it to the kind of menial game that the chairman loves. Victor/Gloria and Hop were able to get the key and used it to get to Rose Tower. Oleana issued an intruder alert and tried to get her workers to fight them, but her people were still defeated. Ultimately, Oleana showed her angry side and battled Victor/Gloria when the trainer arrived at the top of Rose Tower. She hoped that defeating the challenger endorsed by Leon would cause Leon to become disheartened and more open to being persuaded by Rose to help with their plan. Oleana was defeated. Though she was disappointed in her loss, she felt that she had delayed them sufficiently and that Rose had collected enough wishing stars. The next day, Rose set his plan into motion and was able to awaken Eternatus within the underground power plant at Hammerlocke. Eternatus's power forced Oleana's Pokémon to Dynamax, and they rampaged in Hammerocke Stadium until Raihan was able to subdue them. Oleana realized how dangerous the plan really was, and that Rose was in danger as well as the entire Galar region. She was found by the elevator to the underground power plant when Victor/Gloria arrived, and she urged them to go to stop Eternatus.

After Eternatus was subdued, Rose turned himself in to the authorities. Rose's ultimate sentence was unknown, but Oleana was later found at Galar Mine at the Galar Mine, where she was doing some work that apparently counted as "voluntary community service" on Rose's behalf. She was pleased to do such work on Rose's behalf, as he had apparently worked in a coal mine in the past. When Victor/Gloria found her there, she gave them Rose's rare League Card. Oleana described it as one her prized League Cards, but she also assured the trainer that she had a hundred other signed copies of the card. She ultimately thanked Victor/Gloria for defeating Eternatus and felt that Rose would say the same.

Oleana could make another appearance during the Crown Tundra DLC. Oleana could be found at night in the Old Cemetery. She had come to the area to investigate rumors of Rose having been seen in the area. After accosting Victor/Gloria about any sightings of the chairman, the source of the rumors appeared: Rose's brother Peony. Oleana noted the physical resemblance between the brothers, but she was agitated at how different Peony was and quickly called for a Flying Taxi to take her from the Crown Tundra.

In Other Pokémon Games

In Pokémon Masters EX, Oleana and her Garbodor appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature during limited time periods starting in July 2023. Her Garbodor retained his Gigantamax factor. In this game, Oleana and Rose were taken to Pasio from a time prior to Rose setting off the Darkest Day, so the two of them were still in their original roles and were unaware of Rose being arrested or losing his position. She was featured with Rose in the Galar chapter of the Villain Arc, in which she assisted Rose in carrying out his plans on Pasio. During the tournament that was held to decide the future of Pasio, Oleana fought for Rose on a team that included Courtney and Tabitha of Team Magma, while feeling put-off by working with outside help. Oleana managed to win the battle against Rachel, Sawyer and a Beauty with her Gigantamaxed Garbodor making the difference. Afterwards, she made an appearance in "Paulo Interlude: The Last Evil", in which she accompanied Rose when they were called into a meeting with Lysandre, Lusamine and Faba to discuss the growing threat of Paulo and Team Break. During the Villain Arc's Final Chapter, she fought alongside Lusamine against Ariana of Team Rocket, who was using the legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune for the battle. Oleana declared that she would teach her how an organization would fight. Malva provided them with extra help during the battle, and Oleana became extremely peeved as the battle went on.

• She has appeared in the Pokémon: Twilight Wings series of anime shorts. Following the initial status quo from the games, she was seen at Rose's side and mostly reminded him to stay on task. She was featured in the fifth episode, which followed a day in her life where she was managing things while Rose was away. The episode also started with a flashback depicting how Rose took note of her when she was the only researcher working tirelessly on the Dynamax Band technology.
• In the Pokémon anime, Oleana appeared in several of the episodes of the Pokémon Journeys series that adapted the storyline of Sword/Shield. As in the games, she acted as Rose's lieutenant and helped in his efforts to revive Eternatus. She was defeated by Goh in a battle. At the end of the arc, she and Rose went into hiding after Eternatus was defeated, and they made a cameo appearance during Ash and Leon's championship match in which they watched as Eternatus stabilized the Dynamax Energy in Wyndon Stadium. The only Pokémon she used in the anime was a Milotic.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Oleana appeared in the Sword/Shield arc with a similar role as in the games.

Trivia

• She is named after 'Olea', the planet genus that contains olives, while her Japanese name is simply "Olive".
• Oleana is said to have written both of Rose's League Card descriptions. One of them mentions that she is believed to be the only one who can tell Rose's true intent when he is being cryptic.
• She does not have a League Card of her own, but she is seen in the background of the image used for Rose's rare League Card.
• According to an official Facebook post and supported by Twilight Wings, she was formerly a researcher and invented the Dynamax Band.
