Oswin is a playable character in Fire Emblem. He was a fiercely loyal knight of Ostia.

Background

Oswin was a proud knight who served House Cornwell and later Ostia. In Ostia, he dedicated himself to serving Lord Uther, who became marquess following the tragic deaths of his parents. Due to his closeness with Uther, Oswin learned several little-known details about the fall of House Cornwell, including the truth of the marquess of Cornwell and his wife's deaths: suicide. Oswin also trained Uther's younger brother, Hector, at one point, although Hector went behind his back to learn how to fight for himself by fighting in the ring. Oswin worried much over Uther and Hector, especially after Uther began suffering from a sickness similar to the one that took his parents.

In "Another Journey" (Hector Chapter 11), Hector sneaked out of the castle against Uther's wishes in order to join Eliwood on a quest to find his father, Lord Elbert. Uther ultimately decided to let Hector go, but he sent Oswin along with Serra to rendezvous with Hector and protect him throughout the journey. Oswin obeyed, despite wanting to watch over Uther's health. Oswin caught up with Hector and Matthew shortly before they met up with Eliwood's men in "Chapter 12: Birds of a Feather". Then in "Chapter 14: False Friends", they received rumors that Elbert was involved in the conspiracy formed to rebel against House Ostia. Under Uther, this would forbid Oswin from taking further action in aiding Eliwood. But Hector reaffirmed his intentions to help Eliwood, so Oswin decided to dedicate his lance in service to Hector as well.

Oswin later found a conflict between his loyalties. He received reports from Ostia of Uther's declining health. Hector came to Oswin often in order to hear the latest news about his brother, ready to return home if his brother was in danger. But Oswin had to lie, as Uther ordered him not to alert Hector of his health. That was because they did not to put Hector in the difficult position of having to choose between brother or friend, and they saw Eliwood needed Hector at his side. Uther soon died, but Oswin kept that a secret as well. Ultimately Hector was able to guess the truth after they returned to Castle Ostia to regroup in "The Sands of Time" (Eliwood Chapter 28, Hector Chapter 31). Oswin explained his reasoning, but Hector was angry at Oswin and refused to forgive him. However, Hector eventually came to forgive Oswin.

Possible Fates

Oswin has two different endings, depending on whether or not he gets an A Rank Support with Serra.

• Default Ending- Oswin continued serving as a vassal to Hector, the new Marquess Ostia, and he acted as a calm and reasonable voice in Lycia's ruling government.
• Serra and Oswin's Ending- Oswin became a minister to Hector, the new Marquess Ostia, and became busy with his many new duties. Serra continued hitting on Oswin until his protests stopped, and she was able to easy his tired mind.

Support Conversation Summaries

Oswin is capable of having Support conversations with five other characters.

• Dorcas- Oswin approaches Dorcas and thinks he would make a fine knight. He suggests that Dorcas join the Ostian knights, but Dorcas decides to mull it over. Dorcas ultimately declines, saying that his priority was to protect one (Natalie) and not many. Oswin respects his decision and they decide to head off, for the protected ones they held dear.
• Hector- Hector is bothered by Oswin's constant presence and asks him to help the others, but Oswin refuses to break Lord Uther's orders and leave Hector's side. In the second conversation, Oswin is impressed by Hector's fighting style and asks him where he learned how to fight, at which point Hector talks about his time in the ring. Oswin threatens to tell Uther about this, unless Hector agrees to never battle in the ring again, and Hector reluctantly swears himself to it. In the final conversation, Hector apologizes for being a burden to Oswin, but Oswin says that he has learned much about Hector and is actually thankful for the time he's spent protecting Hector.
• Matthew- Throughout their conversations, Matthew and Oswin primarily discuss Hector. In the first conversation, neither can find Hector. Oswin is annoyed at Hector always trying to do things himself, but Matthew says that's why he likes Hector, since things are never dull when he's around. In the next conversation, Matthew wonders why they need to be with Hector on his quest when Uther might need their help in Ostia. They both come up with their own answers, with Oswin saying that Hector can't change his mind when it's made up and Oswin bound himself to serve Hector, while Matthew says that Hector needs them to watch over him because he is faithful and brave at his best, but a spoiled child at his worst. They then both accuse each other of appraising Hector more than usual. In the final conversation, they talk about how Eliwood and Hector will fare in the future after becoming marquesses. They both show concern for Hector, but Oswin remarks that Hector can win people with his inventiveness and has great skill because he does not follow the main path but paves new ones. Oswin then asks Matthew not to tell Hector what he said, because it was unbecoming of a knight.
• Priscilla- In the first Support conversation, Oswin introduces himself to Priscilla and says that he knows her from the time he spent as one of the knights in Cornwell. In the second Support conversation, Priscilla tells Oswin what she knows about House Cornwell's fate. She asks Oswin if her parents were really thieves, and Oswin replies that he wishes he could say they weren't. Priscilla then asks Oswin if he knows her father's whereabouts, and when Oswin says yes, she begins pressing him for answers. In the final Support conversation, Oswin had told Priscilla the fate of her parents: they had committed suicide after they lost their peerage. Priscilla is hurt by this news, but she does not take it out on Oswin and thanks him and Ostia for being honest and just.
• Serra- Oswin catches Serra in the middle of a self-serving prayer and comments on it being unorthodox, then he tells Serra that she must report to the front lines because it is an important battle. He says that Oswin and Serra, as Hector's retainers, had to be at his side in the important battle. In the second conversation, Oswin criticizes Serra for her behavior, saying that her words and actions are bad for morale. He tells her that her lack of control is harming others, so she should exercise some discipline. In the final conversation, Serra is at first silent, and when Oswin asks her what's wrong, she tells him that she thinks he hates her and despite her efforts to talk to him, all he ever does is tell her she's wrong. But Oswin assures her that no one hates her, and many of the soldiers are quite taken with her, including the enemies, which is why Oswin asked her to lay low. Serra takes this as a declaration of love and ponders how she should respond despite her vow of chastity and the age gap between the two.
