Pelleas is a potential playable character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, but he is only playable starting with the second playthrough. He is the only recruitable Dark Sage in the game.

Background

Pelleas was originally a commoner living within Daein, being raised in an orphanage and with no knowledge of his real parents. At the age of 13, he formed a Spirit Pact which allowed him to use dark magic, although the mark of the pact caused him to be mistreated by some who confused him with one of The Branded. He lived a simple and lonely life until he met Izuka, who claimed that Pelleas was the lost son of Ashnard and Almedha, and he brought Pelleas to from a Daein Liberation Army to free Daein from the Begnion Occupation Army. They were based in the desert, where Pelleas met with Almedha, his supposed mother. They were able to form a bond together, although Almedha only thought Pelleas was her son because she believed that she had lost her dragon ability to sense her offspring and did not want to be ashamed that she did not recognize her own son. Pelleas was humble and weak-willed, believing he owed everything to Izuka and ignoring his apparent dementia. Izuka had specifically sought someone with this personality and exploited it to manipulate Pelleas endlessly, as he was ultimately secretly working for both Begnion and his own ends.

Part I: The Silver-Haired Maiden

In "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir", the Dawn Brigade arrived to help fight off Begnion forces that attempted to siege their desert stronghold. Afterwards, Izuka appointed their leader Micaiah the Vice-General of the Daein Liberation Army, and Pelleas helped to talk her into accepting the position, promising that Daein would be freed from Begnion's grip. Pelleas came to be impressed by Micaiah and her leadership abilities, and she later confronted him in a Base Conversation of "Chapter 7: A Gathering Hope". He said he needed Izuka's permission to attend meetings, but Micaiah encouraged him to use his power over him. She also successfully analyzed loneliness as the root of Pelleas's problems, which also impressed him greatly, and he gaver her a Brave Sword for the soldiers. Eventually the efforts of the army were great enough that Begnion's apostle was sending an investigation team that could potentially put a quick end to the war in Daein's favor, and put Pelleas on the throne.

However, complications arose when General Jarod took over Daein Keep and began slaughtering the people of Nevassa in "Endgame: Daein, Arise". Micaiah wanted to help the people, but Izuka forbade action against Begnion troops because it could ruin their chances with the investigation team. At this point, Pelleas stood up to Izuka defending Micaiah and admitted that she had earned the respect of the people, like he never had. He then decided that it was time to earn the respect, and addressed the soldiers. With confidence seemingly renewed by the Black Knight, Pelleas was able to successfully rally his army for the battle, which was successful. He then thanked Micaiah by naming her the Supreme Commander of Daein's Royal Army. Afterwards, Pelleas signed what was supposed to be a treaty with Begnion, and he was officially accepted as the 14th king of Daein. However, he had not read it himself and trusted in Izuka's assessment of the document, this unaware that it was actually a blood pact which bound Pelleas and his country to serving Begnion in the future. Izuka and the Black Knight disappeared on the night of Pelleas's coronation, but he was glad he still had Micaiah to rely on. He also still had Almedha, who pressured him to be more elitist.

Part 3: Intersecting Vows

Unfortunately, Pelleas's apparent fortune was not to last- especially after Lekain confronted him, telling him the truth about the blood pact and giving him his first order: to mobilize the Daein Royal Army against the retreating Laguz Alliance Army. The pressure from this and learning of Izuka's betrayal weighed heavily on Pelleas, causing him to stop smiling and laughing. Pelleas deployed Micaiah and the army in "Chapter 5: Retreat!". The Daein Army failed in thier task in "Chapter 7: Rivals Collide", at which point Lekain confronted and threatened Pelleas, but gave him one more chance. Pelleas tried keeping the blood pact a secret from everyone, including his purported mother. However, he was forced to reveal the truth in "Chapter 12: The Price", when Micaiah had fallen ill and Sothe threatened to leave the army with her due to his opposition of the war. Pelleas confessed everything to Sothe, Micaiah, Almedha and Tauroneo. They convinced him not to lose hope, and he began scouring the royal archives for a possible method of undoing the blood pact while the Daein Army returned to battle against the Laguz Alliance. In "Chapter 13: Blood Pact", Pelleas called in Micaiah and Tauroneo after he found a solution: the pact-make had to be killed by a third party. He then requested that Micaiah kill him.

Two options are originally given in which Micaiah then reluctantly fulfilled his request, or Tauroneo performed the deed instead. However, Pelleas's death was in vain and the blood pact remained in affect until Lekain was killed and the contract destroyed. A third option appears in the second playthrough in which Micaiah passes on the burden to Tauroneo and then tosses herself in the way to save him. She convinces him to stop running away so they could seek another way out of the blood pact. Pelleas later entered the battlefield for the first time along the Daein Royal Army in the last battle with the Laguz Alliance Army in "Endgame: From Pain, Awakening".

Part 4: Of Gods and Men

Following Ashera's awakening and subsequent judgement, all the survivors among the Laguz Alliance, Daein Army and other associated forces were split into three armies by Yune to travel to Begnion and defeat Ashera. Pelleas and Almedha were both assigned to the Hawk Army. In "Chapter 2: Silent World", he was bothered by Almedha's doting and ran from her, then aided Tibarn and the others in battle with the Disciples of Order, although he was very exerted in the process. In the Base Conversation of "Chapter 5: Unforgivable Sin", he conferred with Tauroneo and realized that the blood pact's mark was beginning to fade. He then gave Pelleas a Fenrir tome that was actually a gift from Almedha. In "Endgame: Rebirth", the blood pact was eliminated when Lekain was killed and the blood pact destroyed. If Pelleas was present, he thanked Micaiah and Sothe for all their help. Pelleas came to realize Almedha was not his mother after time, partially from finding that Almedha was a dragon because he had a Spirit's Protection rather than a Brand (and Izuka and Sephiran would confirm he is not Ashnard and Almedha's son if he battled either of them). He then came to terms with her after the final battle and apologized for unintentionally deceiving her while thanking her for showing a mother's love even temporarily.

If Pelleas was alive in the end, he revealed his lack of royal blood and gave up the throne to Micaiah but still served in Daein's royal court and learned to speak easily to all.
