Saleh is a playable unit from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Background[edit]

Saleh was raised in the secluded village of Caer Pelyn by his grandmother, Dara, who was also the village's elder. He became an accomplished sage and did some mercenary work. There was once incident where he killed Zabba, a friend of Gerik's, on the field of battle. He felt extreme guilt for this, and Gerik at first wanted to avenge Zabba, but after Saleh saved his life, Gerik befriended him instead. The two formed a strong friendship, but Saleh always felt uneasy and guilty about the man he had killed. Saleh eventually took on an excitable young pupil named Ewan after he followed him to Caer Pelyn. Despite Ewan's impatience and Saleh's mission being his priority, Saleh agreed to train him because he could see in his eyes that he was capable of becoming a powerful magic user. At Caer Pelyn, he also helped to take care of his grandmother, but his most sacred duty was to watch over and protect Myrrh, who was the daughter of the Great Dragon.

At one point, Myrrh sensed a great energy emanating from Grado and set off to investigate with Saleh acting as her escort. They got caught in a battle and were separated. Saleh then spent some time searching Magvel for Myrrh. He first appeared in "Chapter 5: The Empire's Reach", where he briefly questioned Eirika in Serafew about whether or not she had seen someone matching Myrrh's description, and he then moved on. His next appearance depended on the path chosen by the player. In Ephraim's path, he only appeared in "Chapter 12: Landing at Taizel", where he escorted Ewan to an inn at Taizel. Saleh then left to report his findings about the Great Dragon and warned Ewan not to use hihs power recklessly.

In Eirika's path, Ewan guided Eirika's army to Saleh's home at Caer Pelyn in "Chapter 11: Creeping Darkness". Saleh was about to leave on a mission, but they convinced him to guide Eirika's army to Jehanna. He required that they rest for the night first and brought them to see Dala in "Chapter 12: Village of Silence" after he joined with the army to help fight off monsters along the way. He could also recruit Ewan. While talking with Dala, they discovered that Myrrh was with Ephraim, who was en route to Grado, and she quickly told Saleh to find Myrrh there. L'Arachel convinced Saleh to accompany them as they could go to Grado from Jehanna. Eirika and Ephraim's armies wound up meeting up in "Chapter 15: Scorched Sand", and this is when Saleh was reunited with Myrrh. In Ephraim's path, Saleh and Innes were shown as the only units accompanying Eirika, and he became playable starting in that chapter. He continued to serve the combined army for Myrrh's sake for the remainder of the War of the Stones. Once it was over, Saleh brought Myrrh back to Caer Pelyn, with Ewan running after him.

Possible Fates[edit]

Saleh has three different endings, depending on whether or not he reaches an A Rank Support with one of two characters below. As none of the endings necessarily contradict each other, it is technically possible for the events of any combination of the three endings to canonically occur.

  • Default Ending - Saleh returned to Caer Pelyn and remained a faithful servant of the Manakete. He was not isolated, however, as he was visited by many of the friends he met during the War of the Stones.
  • Eirika and Saleh's Ending - They initially returned to their respective homes after the war. Eirika visited Caer Pelyn when she could. Eventually, she left Renais in Ephraim's care and married Saleh. They had a daughter together who resembled the legendary Nada Kuya.
  • Ewan and Saleh's Ending - Saleh and Ewan returned to Caer Pelyn to study in peace. Ewan worked hard, and his power eventually grew to rival Saleh's. They continued their studies as equals and expanded their knowledge even more.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Saleh is capable of having support conversations with the following four characters:

  • Eirika - Eirika initially approaches Saleh only to find him in the middle of what seems to be meditation, but he says it is actually something called Valega. He then explains the concept of Valega to her and tells Eirika that she reminds him of the warrior princess Nada Kuya, who was one of the ancient five heroes who led a foreign nation and defended Caer Pelyn from its enemies years ago. Eirika does not believe this due to how paralyzed with fear she was when Renais was invaded, but Saleh reminds her that she is still here due to her strength, courage and dignity, and if she achieves victory she would truly becoming this age's Nada Kuya. This gives Eirika a new reason to fight, for which she thanks Saleh. Later Saleh finds Eirika reminiscing about Renais in the past and assures her that she would see the Renais she loved restored. She says they must first concentrate on the battle at at hand but is intrigued by Caer Pelyn and now that she understands it more deeply she asks to visit after the war so she could know more about Valega and Nada Kuya. Saleh assures her she would be greeted with open arms.
  • Ewan - In the first conversation, Ewan comes across Saleh while he is practicing Valega and wants to try it as well. He quickly recants this when Saleh points out his impatience, and he asks for something closer to his skill level, then proceeds to reminisce about the early days of his tutelage, including one time when he had exhausted himself enough to sleep for two days, and Saleh carried him to his home. Ewan thanks him for this, but Saleh only wants Ewan to not push himself too far. In the next conversation, Ewan reminds Saleh of how they first met and asks him why he decided to train him in the first place. Saleh tells him because he saw a talent for magic in his eyes and assures him that his power will grow as his training progresses. Ewan tells him how intimidating he seemed at first due to his silence, but Saleh then tries to teach Ewan the importance of using one's heart to communicate without words. They then recall times when Ewan got in trouble with Saleh. Saleh calls him his most troublesome student, but Ewan promises to be more careful in the future. In the final conversation, Saleh instructs him to take all of his scrolls and magical items for his own if anything happened to him, as he was concerned that he would not survive the war. He also wanted her to watch over Dara and Caer Pelyn. Ewan doubts that this would happen and that he would be capable of living up to those wishes, but Saleh tell him that he will surpass him one day depending on his own efforts. This motivates Ewan to vow to protect Saleh in battle, saying that the two of them could get through anything if they combined their power. Saleh is impressed by how dependable Ewan has become and decides to use the war to teach him every last bit of magic that he knows.
  • Gerik - The mercenary greets Saleh, remarking how unusual it is the two of them are working together. Saleh begins to ask Gerik a question, but changes the subject. When they speak again, Gerik brings up the elder of Caer Pelyn and says that Saleh should be more considerate to his grandmother, not just by taking care of her, but by doing something nice for her like buying her some jewelry. In their last conversation, Saleh finally comes out and asks if Gerik hates him for what happened to Gerik's friend, whom Saleh had accidentally killed in an old battle. Gerik however insists that he's forgiven Saleh for that and that as mercenaries it just comes with the job. Saleh says that Gerik is a good man, but Gerik dismisses it and insists that when it's all over, he'll go visit Caer Pelyn and let Saleh throw a feast for him.
  • Myrrh - Myrrh shows discomfort with Saleh always being around, and Saleh tells her that looking after the Great Dragon gives his life meaning. She refuses her father's title and says she has done nothing special, but Saleh tells her that mankind has forgotten the sacred debt that they owe the Great Dragon so he must atone for that by looking after her. He offers to leave if she wants, but she allows him to stay. In the next conversation, Myrrh asks Saleh if her father ever visited the village, and he recalls a story Dara told of how the Great Dragon saved the village when she was young. Myrrh is surprised that her father helped them, but at the same time decides that based on her time with Saleh, she could understand why the Great Dragon protected them and that said that she would likely protect humanity as well. In the final conversation, Saleh offers Myrrh to stay at the village for some time. Myrrh agrees with this but says that she cannot stay long because as her father said, being both human and monster, she is at the same time neither as she would never truly fit in with either humans or monsters. Saleh attempts to assure her that she can be accepted, and Myrrh is cheered, saying that she will consider his offer again after the war. She also assures Saleh that because of the time they spent together, she will not consider herself lonely or an outcast after returning to the Darkling Woods.
