Sumo Bros.
The Sumo Bros. are a a type of enemy that has appeared in several Mario games. They are a relative of the Hammer Bros..
Information[edit]
A Sumo Bro is a large and powerful Koopa that has a spike on top of its head, which protects it from being jumped on. Sumo Bros. typically stand on raised platforms and stomp on the ground. Once they stop on the ground, it makes a spark rain down to the ground below. Upon contact with the ground, that spark produces a wave of fire that spreads in both directions. They can typically only be defeated using weapons (such as Koopa shells) or power-ups, or by jumping into a block or bumpable platform that one may be standing on.
Appearances[edit]
The Sumo Bros. originally appeared in Super Mario World as uncommon enemies. They then returned in New Super Mario Bros. U, where they appeared only within the area known as Screwtop Tower. In this appearance, their sparks produced waves of electricity instead of fire. In the New Super Luigi U version, they appeared in that game's replacement for the tower, Sumo Bro's Spinning Tower, as well as an earlier stage called Sumo Bro's Bridge.
In both versions, there was also a boss called Boss Sumo Bro, who was the boss of both versions of the tower. Boss Sumo Bro was an ordinary Sumo Bro that was made gigantic by Kamek's magic. He attacked similarly to a normal Sumo Bro, but with a larger scale. His stomps could also paralyze any characters on the ground at the time. To fight him, Mario or one of his allies would have to bump into the platform beneath him in order to flip him onto his back, at which point his vulnerable belly could be attacked. He was defeated after three hits.
Sumo Bros. also made some minor appearances in minigames in Super Mario Party, which marked their first appearance in the spin-off games.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- A Sumo Bro known as Fire Sumo appeared in an episode of the Super Mario World cartoon, where the tremors produced from his stomps were enough to crack the ground beneath Luigi and send him plummeting underground.
