Tauros is a rare and violent bull-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is an exclusively male Pokémon, and its female counterpart is Miltank.

Information

Tauros is a rowdy Pokémon with a lot of stamina. It targets an enemy and charges forward determinedly while whipping its tails behind it. Tauros will not stop running until it hits something. They can only be satisfied if they are rampaging at all times, so in the absence of an actual opponent or prey they charge at thick trees and knock them down to calm themselves out. Tauros use their three tails to whip themselves in order to work up their will to battle.

They fight with other members of their horde by locking horns to prove their strength, and the herd's protector proudly displays its battle-scarred horns.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Tauros was rarely found at the Safari Zone, although it was more common in Yellow.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, it appeared rarely at Routes 38 and 39, appearing only during the morning and daytime in Crystal. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Tauros was also found at Route 48 and the Safari Zone's Savannah area. Tauros could also be caught at the Scary Cave course of the Pokéwalker, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Tauros could be located at Routes 209 and 210 (Route 210 only in Platinum) using the Pokéradar.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, it could be found at Safari Zone. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Tauros could be snagged from Greevil at Citadark Isle, and after being purified it could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. Tauros also appeared in Pokémon Trozei! at Secret Storage 12, Endless Level 32, Forever Level 7 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, they could be recruited at the tenth through twelfth floors of Great Canyon, the tenth through sixteenth floors of Western Cave, the thirty-sixth through forty-third floors of Wish Cave and the forty-first through forty-forth floors of Joyous Tower.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, they were recruited at the first seven floors of Far Amp Plains and the first seventeen floors of Shimmer Hill. In Pokémon Ranger, Tauros was found at Kisara Plains. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Alima, they were located at Chroma Cave. Tauros also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Windy Prairie.

• In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tauros appeared as an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit with the added effect of increasing a player fighter's speed. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of Tauros would possess Bowser in a battle where it has uncontrollable speed and deals damage through dashing attacks.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode set at the Safari Zone (which was banned from the American broadcast) had Ash capturing thirty Tauros (one of which Brock caught for him), all of which were sent back to Professor Oak due to Ash's party being full. They made a few appearances in episodes set at Pallet Town and had a penchant for stampeding. Ash first used one of the Tauros during the Orange League tournament at the end of the Orange Islands season. During the Johto series, Ash used one for a Tauros-battling event of the Pokémon Swap Meet, and he also used it in the Silver Conference. Ash also used it during the Battle Frontier series for his challenge of Anabel.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, during the Red/Green/Blue arc, Tauros were shown as the mounts of various Team Rocket grunts, which Green imitated with her Ditto. Pearl also caught a Tauros during the Diamond/Pearl arc which became part of his main team.

Trivia

• Tauros's name seems to be a truncation of its Japanese name, which refers to the centaur. Taurus is also the Latin name for bull, and its name may also have been chosen in reference to the Spanish word for bull, "toro", which is known for being declared during bullfights.
• Even though they are gendered counterparts, Tauros are incapable of breeding with Miltank or with any Pokémon save for a Ditto.
