Tomodachi Life (known in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: New Life) is a life simulation game for the Nintendo 3DS game featuring Mii characters. It is known for its particular light-hearted nature, as a majority of the game is portrayed in an absurd or surreal manner. It is actually the second game in its series, following the original Tomodachi Collection, but it is the first game in the series to be released outside Japan.

Gameplay

The game is set on an island named by the player, who can populate the island with Miis who are either imported through from the 3DS or created within the game. The Miis are given voices that are adjusted by the player, and they develop several distinct personalities depending on the settings chosen by the player. Each Mii moves into a different apartment on the island, and as more Miis populate the island, more attractions become available. One of the basic elements of the game is checking on the Miis in their respective apartments and helping them with their various problems. These problems can involve needing food, wanting new clothes, being sick or wanting to make new friends. Whenever a problem is solved, it fills the Mii's happiness meter and also gives the player extra money. Once the happiness meter is full, the Mii will level up and can be given one of several gifts: a song, a special item, a special room set, a catchphrase or pocket money. The player can even view Miis' dreams when they sleep, which are often of a very absurd nature but come with a reward in the form of a special item.

There are a number of attractions throughout the island, including shops, a news tower and a variety of scenic areas. Throughout different times of the day, various events are held at some of these places, most of which are mundane, bizarre, or both. There is also a dance hall, where Miis can perform some of the songs that they learn from leveling up as a group. There are also a number of minigames, some of which are small quizzes, but there is also an old-fashioned parody RPG known as "Tomodachi Quest" that can sometimes be played at the amusement park. All of these areas act as a backdrop for the Miis and their relationships. Miis can be introduced to each other and befriend each other. They are also prone to random fights which require a mediator, but Miis of different genders can also form relationships, which can result in marriage and having a child. These children can become Travelers who are capable of visiting other people's games via Streetpass. Special items can also be 'imported' through Streetpass or Spotpass.

Legacy

Tomodachi Life was featured with its own self-titled stage in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It is set in the Mii Apartments and features background appearances by Miis made on the system's Mii Maker.
