Vaida is a playable unit in Fire Emblem. She was known for her fiery attitude and very tough demeanor. However, she was fiercely loyal to her home country of Bern.
Background[edit]
Vaida once was a Wyvern General fighting for Bern. She was disgusted with the current king, Desmond, but she saw hope that Bern could be restored to its former glory in the form of the prince, Zephiel. An incident occurred one day when another general brought up false accusations of a rebellion as an excuse to enhance his military career. This caused various wyvern riders to kill the innocents associated with the "rebellion". Vaida sent her unit (which included Heath) out to stop them. They were condemned to die for treason, but Vaida alerted them so they could flee the country in time. Vaida herself was stripped of rank and country, and she received the scar on her face from the incident. But Vaida later made a deal with the Black Fang and began working with them in hopes of regaining her former position.
Vaida first appeared as the boss of "Unfulfilled Heart" (Eliwood Chapter 24, Hector Chapter 26). Vaida and her wyvern riders ambushed Eliwood's group after they left Bern castle, with power granted to her by Nergal. She successfully lured Eliwood and his group into the open by threatening Nils. Vaida could be killed during this chapter, but letting her live was the only way she would eventually become an ally. If she survived, Sonia later scolded Vaida for her failure and refused to give her another chance in the Black Fang. Sonia told Vaida to consider herself lucky that since she was not a member of the Black Fang, she would not be punished for her failure with death.
She returned in "Cog of Destiny" (Eliwood Chapter 27, Hector Chapter 29) (again, only if she had not been killed during Unfulfilled Heart). Vaida and a squad of wyvern riders appeared to attack Eliwood's group when they were approaching the Shrine of Seals and had passed the mountain range. Apparently Prince Zephiel had told Vaida that Eliwood had saved his life from assassins, but Vaida was reluctant to believe this and launched her attack anyway. However, Eliwood could talk to her and when he confirmed that he had saved Zephiel, Vaida agreed to join with Eliwood's group (although the wyvern riders working under her continued to attack Eliwood's group).
Possible Fates[edit]
Vaida has three possible endings, depending on her Support conversations.
- Default Ending- All that is known of Vaida's fate are rumors. One says she was killed by Bern forces. Another said that she was still alive and in the service of Prince Zephiel.
- Harken and Vaida's Ending- Harken and Vaida desired to be together, but they were bound by loyalty to their lords. So they parted ways and did not see each other again.
- Heath and Vaida's Ending- Vaida returned to Bern after repaying her debt to Eliwood. She sought to aid Prince Zephiel from the shadows despite no longer being an official knight. Heath soon came to Bern to join her.
Support Conversation Summaries[edit]
Vaida is capable of having Support conversations with seven other characters.
- Canas- Vaida confronts Canas and becomes enraged at him for reading in the middle of battle. She later meets Canas a second time and, still annoyed to see him reading, takes his book and feeds it to her wyvern despite Canas protesting about the book's rarity. Then Vaida meets with Canas again while he's reading, but this time he reads a book about wyvern-mounted combat. Vaida seems interested until she sees Canas's description of wyverns is inaccurate, and he does not even notice that Vaida's pet is a wyvern. She then swipes Canas's book and feeds it to her wyvern as well.
- Dorcas- Apparently Eliwood had arranged for Dorcas and Vaida to meet with each other, but in the first two conversations they miss each other completely. Each forms different ideas about the other. Vaida had heard about Dorcas leaving his wife at home to go on the journey and thought he was a scoundrel with a girl in every village. Dorcas hears that Vaida is pure but too idealistic and thinks that Vaida is young (probably thinking of her as a rebellious teenager). In the third Support conversation, they finally meet each other, but neither of them recognize each other.
- Harken- In the first conversation, Harken introduces himself to Vaida politely. However, Vaida tells him not to be so polite because they are enemies and says she tried to kill Eliwood once. But Harken says that if Eliwood welcomed Vaida to their side, then they are allies. In the second conversation, Harken inquires about Vaida's position. She tells him about how she lost her rank as a royal knight of Bern, but she refuses to tell him why and tells him to stay away from her. In the final conversation, Harken tells Vaida about his time in the Black Fang. He mentions having once seen Vaida speaking to Lady Sonia (presumably in the opening scene of "Pale Flowers of Darkness"). Vaida imagines Harken enjoyed seeing Vaida being scolded, but Harken said that he was envious of her for her focus of mind, for she was willing to use any means necessary to return to her master, while Harken had lost his master and his will to live. Vaida corrects Harken by saying that the master she served is not King Desmond, but Prince Zephiel. Harken is glad to have the talk and declares they should fight alongside each other as compatriots. Vaida insists that she doesn't care about Harken at all
- Heath- Heath and Vaida are reunited, and Heath is glad to see her. He is surprised by her scar, but she tells him not to whine about it and that she got it from being weak. In the next conversation, Vaida scolds Heath and says that he has gotten too soft since he left her command. She asks Heath about the fates of her other riders, and Heath says that they have all died. Heath expresses doubt at Bern's future, but Vaida seems sure that Zephiel will restore Bern's prosperity upon becoming king. In the final conversation, they talk about the future. Heath does not know what he will do with his life, while Vaida is determined to return to Bern and help Zephiel, even at the cost of her life. Heath asks Vaida to take him with her and does not care if it is his end, saying that he is her soldier and will go where she goes.
- Karla- In the first conversation, Vaida mentions having heard of Karla, but she becomes furious when she finds Karla does not know who she is. In the second conversation, Vaida angrily yells at Karla for not knowing of her and then ignoring her. Karla mentions she remembered little about other fighters since she started fighting in coliseums only to find her brother, Karel. Vaida becomes determined to show her strength to Karla. In the final conversation, Karla continues to infuriate Vaida by not paying much attention to her display of strength, and saying that they should not fight each other because fate had made them allies in Eliwood's army. Karla finally agreed to battle Vaida after the journey was over, but she then angered Vaida again by suggesting that they could be good friends.
- Merlinus- Vaida is sent to guard over Merlinus, but he becomes terrified of her and her fierce attitude. In the second conversation, he attempts to get rid of her by making up reports of an incoming enemy. In the third conversation, Merlinus gives her one of his dumplings, while Vaida actually enjoys and finds delicious. Vaida repays Merlinus by giving him a meatball from her sack, but Merlinus panics again when Vaida does not tell him what kind of meat it is made from.
- Wallace- Wallace and Vaida meet, and they immediately begin a bragging match. Wallace and Vaida begin competing in a series of matches, both trying to preserve the honor of their homelands. After a series of matches with different outcomes, they decide to call in Eliwood as an impartial judge. To their dismay, Eliwood ranks them both to be equal. Wallace and Vaida have a brief moment where they compliment each other, before they begin arguing again.
