Xane (commonly known as Chainy in fan translations) is a mysterious character who appears as a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi, as well as the remakes Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon.
Background[edit]
Xane was one of the Divine Dragons who existed in ancient times. When the time came for the dragons to become Manaketes by sealing their dragon forms within dragonstones, Xane complied and wound up being one of the last surviving divine dragons. In his human form, he was somewhat effeminate and arrogant. He disliked humans for their treatment of dragonkind and thus sympathized with Medeus, although he did not ally himself with Medeus's empire and instead was loyal to fellow former divine dragon Gotoh. Although he and Gotoh had discarded their dragonstones after the war (and thus could no longer transform into dragons), they still had power and knowledge above that of normal humans. Xane specifically had a special shape-shifting ability that he could use to temporarily mimic anyone of any class.
Book One[edit]
During the War of Darkness, Xane (passing himself off as a foreigner from an obscure country) was captured by Dolhr forces in Altea and imprisoned after he refused to use his talents to serve them. After Marth saved him in Chapter 16 (13 SNES), Xane joined with his army, claiming to be impressed by his style (but likely he was actually acting under orders from Gotoh). Despite his dislike for humans, Xane came to make an exception for Marth due to finding him different from other humans. He would also have a special conversation with Tiki in Shadow Dragon where he asked her about her nightmares and helped to assuage her doubts after teasing her by mimicking her. After the war, Xane departed without a word.
Book Two[edit]
Three years later, Gotoh sent Xane to meet Marth in the desert and escort him to the Ice Dragons' Temple. Xane got bored of waiting for Marth in the desert and so he decided to prank him by impersonating Tiki when he arrived in Chapter 11. Xane then dropped the charade and began guiding Marth to the temple. Along the way he told him about the history of dragonkind as well as the truth about Gotoh and Medeus's pasts, and his own true identity as a Divine Dragon. After escorting him there, Xane continued to help Marth's army for the remainder of his journey. Following the war's end, he once more vanished without a trace.
Trivia[edit]
- In Shadow Dragon, he receives Support Bonuses from Tiki, Marth and Nagi.
