Sunkern is a very weak Pokémon that tries to move as little as possible. This is because it conserves all of the nutrients stored in its body for its eventual evolution. Sunkern do not even eat and subsist only on morning dew from the leaves of plants. Their only method of defense against predators like Spearow is to violently and desperately shake their leaves against the attacker. Sunkern are known to drop from the sky suddenly. Their numbers also boom in years following cold summers.

It evolves into Sunflora when exposed to a Sun Stone.

*In the Pokémon anime, Sunkern was initially featured in an episode of the Johto series, where Ash and his friends found one frozen by a place called the Sunflora Lounge. After they thawed it out and spent some time with it, Ash used his Sun Stone to evolve it so that it could call over more Sunflora to take a golden anniversary picture with an elderly couple. Sunkern have also made various minor appearances throughout the anime.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Gold confronted a group of Sunkern during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc and captured one of them to help fight off a Skarmory. Gold did not use it often, but it still evolved into Sunflora within the arc.

Trivia
*Sunkern's name is a combination of "sunflower" with "kernel" (which is a word for seed), such that its name is basically a synonym for "sunflower seed".

*Even though Magikarp is constantly treated as the weakest Pokémon in-universe, Sunkern is actually the weakest Pokémon statistically.
