Sunkern is a sunflower seed-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. Its evolved form is Sunflora.

Information[edit]

Sunkern is a very weak Pokémon that tries to move as little as possible. This is because it conserves all of the nutrients stored in its body for its eventual evolution. Sunkern do not even eat and subsist only on morning dew from the leaves of plants. Their only method of defense against predators like Spearow is to violently and desperately shake their leaves against the attacker. Sunkern are known to drop from the sky suddenly. Their numbers also boom in years following cold summers.

It evolves into Sunflora when exposed to a Sun Stone.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Sunkern were commonly found at Route 24 and National Park. They also appeared at the Safari Zone's Meadow area in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Sunkern appeared only during the daytime. It could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Beautiful Beach course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Emerald, Sunkern could be uncommonly found in the Safari Zone's extension. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they could appear at Route 204's northern area when the Pokéradar was used. In Black and White, they could be found at Route 12.

Other Games[edit]

Sunkern appeared as an obstacle in the "Harvest Time" e-Reader minigame. In Pokémon Channel, they appeared at Mt. Snowfall on sunny days. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 1, Secret Storage 11, Endless Level 5 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first three floors of Wish Cave, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle and the first nineteen basement floors of Happy Outlook. Sunkern also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Dolce Island, Hinder Cape and the Forest Temple.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Sunkern was initially featured in an episode of the Johto series, where Ash and his friends found one frozen by a place called the Sunflora Lounge. After they thawed it out and spent some time with it, Ash used his Sun Stone to evolve it so that it could call over more Sunflora to take a golden anniversary picture with an elderly couple. Sunkern have also made various minor appearances throughout the anime.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Gold confronted a group of Sunkern during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc and captured one of them to help fight off a Skarmory. Gold did not use it often, but it still evolved into Sunflora within the arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Sunkern's name is a combination of "sunflower" with "kernel" (which is a word for seed), such that its name is basically a synonym for "sunflower seed".
  • Even though Magikarp is constantly treated as the weakest Pokémon in-universe, Sunkern is actually the weakest Pokémon statistically.
