Aipom is a small monkey-like Pokémon with a distinctive tail that was introduced in the second generation games. It had not evolutionary line until the fourth generation games, when it was discovered to evolve into Ambipom.

Information

Aipom is unique for its tail, the tip of which has a dextrous, handlike appendage but with only three digits. They live atop trees and use their tails for balance when leaping between trees. The tail is powerful enough to grab onto a tree branch and hold Aipom into the air, so it often wraps its tail around a branch in order to sleep without falling from the tree. Aipom also uses its tail to grab faraway fruit.

Although it can use its tail as naturally and freely as hands, the downside is that most Aipom are so dependent on their tails that their actual hands become clumsy. Aipom will evolve into Ambipom when it levels up after learning Double Hit, which it normally learns at Level 32.

Mainstream Games

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Aipom could be uncommonly found by headbutting trees in various areas. In ForeRed. LeafGreen and Emerald, Aipom appeared in the Altering Cave with the use of an e-card, and in Emerald it was also uncommonly found at the Safari Zone's extension.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Aipom had a chance of appearing trees that were covered in honey.

Other Games

Aipom had a minor role in the "Eager Eevee" minigame of Pokémon Stadium 2, where it appeared to lift the crates. In Pokémon Colosseum, a Shadow Aipom could be snagged from Cipher Peon Cole at the Shadow Pokémon Laboratory, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Aipom also starred in the e-Reader minigame "Harvest Time", where the player controlled an Aipom that had to collect falling fruits while avoiding Sunkern. In Pokémon Channel, it appeared at Mt. Snowfall on cloudy mornings and days as well as snowy mornings. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Endless Level 3, Forever Level 3, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den, and an Aipom was also shown to be one of Lucy Fleetfoot's two Pokémon. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, they could be recruited at the first six floors of Uproar Forest, but in Red Rescue Team a special Wonder Mail mission had to be completed to recruit Aipom which involved delivering a Radar Orb to an Aipom on the fifth floor of Silent Chasm.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Aipom could be recruited at the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest and the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Alimia, it was found at Union Road. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Curl Bay, Wireless Tower and the Forest Temple. Aipom also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone and the Haunted Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, Aipom started appearing in the Johto series where they were usually shown as troublemakers of some kind. It became more prominent when Ash caught one during the Battle Frontier episodes after it spent several episodes following him and stealing his hat. This Aipom being female and possessive of Ash, throwing a tantrum after she was temporarily sent to Professor Oak. Although Ash left all of his old Pokémon save for Pikachu behind when he went to Sinnoh, Aipom actually sneaked aboard the boat and followed him. Due to Aipom's interest in Pokémon Contests, Ash traded it to Dawn for her Buizel. Aipom later evolved into Ambipom while protecting Dawn from a group of Unown shortly after learning Double Hit.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Aipom initially appeared during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc as one of the Pokémon that Gold had around the house and wound up becoming part of his team. Aipom was one of his weaker Pokémon, so Gold mostly had it distract opponents with its speed. It evolved into an Ampibom prior to the HeartGold/SoulSilver arc.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of plays on "ape" and "palm" (due to its hand-like tail) or possibly "pom-pon" (which Aipom's tail also resembles).
