Ana is the third member of the player's party in Mother and the game's only female playable character.
Background
Ana was a young girl hailing from the harsh and wintry land of Snowman. She was a kindhearted girl who lived in a chateau near the town and secretly had amazing psychic powers, although her father admitted that she was not a brave girl. She foretold Ninten's arrival in a dream, and when he arrived with her missing hat, she knew it was him. Ana then joined with Ninten's group with the intent of looking for her missing mother and said goodbye to her father, suggesting that they investigate Youngtown first. At Youngtown, they found many children whose parents' were abducted by an alien spacecraft, raising the possibility that Ana's mother had suffered the same fate.
As the group hiked up Mt. Itoi, Teddy left Ninten and Ana alone in a room to sort out their feelings. Ana invited Ninten to dance and asked him if he loved her, and if he said yes than she admitted that she loved Ninten ever since he first appeared in her dream. They were then interrupted by the attack of the R7038 robot. After this incident, Ninten, Lloyd and Ana made their way to the top of the mountain to confront the alien conqueror Giygas, who was behind all of the parental kidnappings. The three sang the eight melodies to Giygas in order to drive him off.
Afterwards, all of the captured Earth people were freed, and Ana was joyfully reunited with her mother. Ninten dropped her off at her home, where she promised not to forget him, and because of this she said she would see him later instead of saying goodbye. Ana was last seen receiving a letter from Ninten and missing him very much, with the details of their future unspecified.
Abilities
Physically, she is the weakest of the group. In battle she primarily wields frying pans as weapons and can also use the shared slingshot and boomerang weapons. Her greatest strengths lie in her PSI abilities, as she is the only character in Mother with offensive PSI abilities and also learns more PSI abilities than anyone else in the game. The following are the PSI abilities that she learns throughout the game:
- Telepathy - Her default ability that can only be used outside of battle. She can use it to read certain beings' minds, usually to get hints or progress in the plot.
- LifeUp - A healing ability that Ana learns the stronger four forms of throughout the game. LifeUp B (learned at Level 1) restores 75-80 HP of a single ally, LifeUp y (learned at Level 12) restores all HP of a single ally, LifeUp pi (learned at Level 22) restores 55-65 HP of all allies in battle only, and LifeUp omega (learned at Level 34) restores all HP of all allies in battle only.
- PK Freeze - An ice-based psychokinetic attack which Ana learns all four forms of: a (Level 2), B (Level 8), y (Level 21) and omega (Level 29). While it can be used on only one enemy, the omega version affects all enemies. The y version will also bring the enemy to critical damage.
- PK Thunder - An electrically-charged psychokinetic attack that Ana learns all three forms of: a (Level 2), B (Level 9) and y (Level 28). Each is more powerful than the last, and although each form targets just one enemy, the attack has a chance of repeating itself.
- Brainshock - An ability Ana learns at Level 3 that can make an opponent feel strange.
- PSI Shield - A defensive ability that Ana learns both forms of. PSI Shield a (learned at Level 4) shields one ally so that they only receive half damage, and PSI Shield B (learned at Level 9) similarly shields all allies.
- Healing - A status-restoring ability that Ana learns all four forms of. Healing a (learned at Level 5) cures poison, Healing B (learned at Level 13) heals Paralysis, Healing y (learned at Level 14) heals stonification and Healing pi (learned at level 22) cures sleep.
- PK Beam - A powerful beam attack that Ana learns all four forms of: a (Level 5), B (Level 11), y (Level 25) and omega (Level 33). The y form will instantly kill one enemy, while the omega version attacks all enemies.
- PSI-Magnet - The only PSI ability that does not require PP, as it drains PP from opponents in order to replenish Ana's own PP. Learned at Level 7.
- PSI Block - Ana learns this ability at Level 8. It prevents the enemy from using PSI moves.
- Hypnosis - Ana learns this ability at Level 9. It puts one enemy to sleep.
- Paralysis - Ana learns this ability at Level 15. This move paralyzes one enemy.
- PK Fire - A fire-based psychokinetic attack that affects an entire row of enemies, and Ana learns all four forms: a (Level 17), B (Level 27), y (Level 31) and omega (Level 35). Each is progressively stronger than the last to the point where the final version can instantly defeat all enemies.
- Super Healing - A special form of Healing learned at Level 18 which will fully revive an ally at full HP at the cost of a whopping 36 PP.
- Shield Off - Learned at Level 19, this ability breaks an opponent's shield.
- Darkness - Ana learns this at Level 20. It blinds one enemy.
- Power Shield - An ability that Ana learns at Level 24 which surrounds one ally in a reflective shield.
- Brain Cyclone - A move that Ana learns at Level 26 which acts as an advanced version of Brainstorm and makes all the opponents feel strange.
- Teleport - A PSI-using baby in Youngtown teaches this movie to Ana as well as Ninten. She can use this to teleport to any town that the group has visited (except for Magiciant, which can only be teleported to with the Onyx Hook). The player needs only running space to pull off this move, as Ninten and company must break out into a run and pick up enough speed to make the teleport.
Trivia
- Ana bears a strong resemblance (particularly in her official art) to Paula of Earthbound and they can be considered counterparts due to having similar gameplay and storyline roles in their respective games, as well as similar affections towards the heroes of their respective games.
- It is possible that Ana's name (and possibly even Paula's) is derived from Pollyanna, a general name for an optimistic girl as well as the name of the series' unofficial theme song that appears in all of the games.
- A sticker of Ana appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
