Mawile is a small Pokémon with a giant set of jaws attached to its head that was introduced in the third generation games.

Information

Mawile appears to be a docile Pokémon, but its adorable appearance is actually a ruse to lower the guard of its prey before it consumes it with a huge set of jaws growing out of its head. These jaws are actually horns that transformed. It is capable of chewing through even steel beams.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Ruby Version, Sableye could be found somewhat commonly at Granite Cave, the Cave of Origin, Sky Pillar and Victory Road. In Emerald, it was only rarely found at Victory Road.

In Diamond and Pearl and Platinum, it could appear uncommonly appear at Iron Island when a Ruby cartridge was inserted in the GBA slot. In HeartGold, it could appear at Route 9 during swarms. It could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Rally course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In Black and White, it was uncommonly found at Challenger's Cave.

Other Games

A Shadow Mawile could be snagged from Cipher Commander Exol at Pyrite Town in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation games. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Mawile could be caught at the Cave in the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 10, Secret Storage 19, Endless Level 30 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the eighth through twelfth floors of Magama Cavern and the sixty-eighth through ninetieth floors of Buried Relic, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the eighth through fifteenth basement floors of Quicksand Cave and Final Maze.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Peril Cliffs. Mawile also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Cavern Zone.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Hoenn series featured a performer who owned her own female Mawile. It developed an unrequited crush on Brock's Lombre and also turned away the advances of Ash's Crawdaunt. Lombre changed its mind about Mawile after evolving into Ludicolo, but the Mawile was no longer interested and moved on to pursuing another trainer's Psyduck. Aside from that episode, Mawile's appearances have been minor.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Ruby/Sapphire arc featured Ruby and Steven Stone teaming up upon meeting each other for the first time to fight off a group of Mawile that attacked them in Granite Cave. The first Mawile was successful in tricking Ruby with its appearance, but he was able to avoid being consumed by its jaw. During the Emerald arc, Noland also used Mawile in battle.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "maw" (referring to its giant mouth) and "wile" (due to the tricks it pulls off to lure Pokémon into its trap).
• Its name was initially misspelled as "Mawhile" in the American edition of Ruby's Pokédex entry, but this was corrected for the European editions.
