Tennis is a sports game for the NES that is based on the eponymous sport.

Gameplay

The player uses simple gameplay for tennis matches in which the ball must be hit past the opponent in order to scale. There were singles and doubles matches and support for two players. Tennis also had five difficulty levels, rising from Beginner to Advanced. Mario also makes a guest appearance as an umpire.

Legacy

Tennis was accompanied by a Game Boy counterpart which utilized similar gameplay, and there was also a 9-Volt minigame based on it within WarioWare: Twisted!. It also acted as a forebearer for later tennis-based games such as Mario Tennis.

Ports and Remakes

  • An arcade version known as Vs. Tennis was released in 1984.
  • Nintendo allowed Hudson Soft to port Tennis to their NEC PC-8801 in 1985.
  • It was available as an unlockable NES game in the original Doubutsu no Mori for the Nintendo 64 and the remake Animal Crossing for the Gamecube.
  • In 2002, it was one of the games released as part of the e-Reader.
  • In 2006, it was released for download over the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.
